Grooms Attire Question

Hey ladies,

I'm really stuck on groom's attire. Originally I thought I wanted suits, because our wedding has a casual feel to it, and I thought that it would be appropriate. I was especially leaning towards this for two other reasons: 1) I found out that we can rent ties that match my girls dresses 2) I figured all the guys would already have black suits.

Recently, two revelations/ideas have me second guessing myself. 1) Some of the guys don't have black suits (although they have all stated that they wouldn't mind buying one because they feel like they should have one anyways) 2) Is it weird if they are all in suits that don't necessarily match? Originally this didn't bother me because my girls were all going to have different styles of dresses, but they ended up all choosing the same style.

Also, FH is leaning towards suits. But I don't think he's thought of it from a different styles perspective.

What does everything else think? Is it too much to ask some of the guys to buy all new suits? Will it look silly to have all black suits, but different styles?

Thanks!!

Re: Grooms Attire Question

  • What's the price difference btwn buying and renting?

I don't think it'd look weird for them to all be in different color black suits...but if it's a lot more expensive than renting, maybe you could consider telling them to buy or giving then an option of a place to rent from?
  • We're having our guys wear their own black slacks/dress shoes and we bought their shirts & ties (all the same). FI is wearing his suit, so he'll be a little different and more dressy looking.

  • Thanks ladies!!  Great point about owning the tuxes.

I looked into having them all rent suits as a thought (if it would be about the same price as renting a tux), but I couldn't really find a place that would do that (that wasn't really sketchy) in my area.

Buying a suit can completely vary in price, which was one of the reasons I liked that idea, both for the groomsmen, and for the bridesmaids picking out different styles. That way everyone can spend as much or as little as they want/can afford as long as it meets the requirements (black for the suits and color/material/length for the dresses).

I'm sure the guys could get away with spending less than it would cost to buy a tux if they wanted.
  • Great idea ewhiteman! I might suggest that to FH.

[QUOTE]Check out sales at Koohls and Penneys.  They have amazing prices!  Usually less than a tux rental, and the guys get to keep their suits.

This exactly. We got the shirts at Kohls for 24/each and they have big and large sizes which is important cuz my "little" brother is 6'5.

Also, when we were contemplating just white shirts we ordered these vest sets from JCPenney. We decided to go with a black/gray striped shirt per FI's request and the vest set in black just looked too dark.

  • I don't think unmatching black suits will look silly.  I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

  • I think having all black suis but different styles will look nice. Just like all the gals will have different hiar styles, this will add to the mix alittle bit and allow each guy to express their personality in terms of the suit they choose. Good luck!
