Suits and Tuxes (XP Oct 11)

FI was looking up tuxes last night (it was really endearing because it was like 1am and he was looking up wedding stuff), and then came across something he really likes, and is totally his style. I love it too, I think it will look great. It's a suit though, not a tux, so I'm thinking the guys should just do regular suits then also. It would be kind of silly if the groom isn't wearing a formal tux and all the GM's are.

Originally, we were going to let them pick whatever style tux they like in black and white and have done with it. I guess we will just give the same stipulations for a suit then, does that sound right?

Here's what FI picked out:

[QUOTE]I am really trying to be helpful.  Are you SURE?  I really think he should try and find something a little less unusual.   Do you want your wedding to look like a costume play?  This is SO unusual, I really do advise you to rethink this decision.

<div>It's FI's style, it is so him and I love that. I don't find it unusual at all. It's not a tux, but that's fine by me. Our wedding is outside and in no way black tie, so I don't really see an issue. The GMs will be free to choose whatever style suit they want, so I don't see where it would be "costume-y". I do admit, the man in the picture does not do the suit any justice and is really creepy looking. Although, I did suggest he find something in a different material.</div><div>

I'm not sure what your question is.  What are you asking?

Has he already bought that suit?

  • Tuxs aren't really appropriate for outside, informal weddings. Suits would be the way to go for your groomsmen.

From the op "Originally, we were going to let them pick whatever style tux they like in black and white and have done with it. I guess we will just give the same stipulations for a suit then, does that sound right?" Just wanted to make sure we were right in going with suits. Thanks!

So, I am doing black suits for my wedding.  Good for daytime.  If you tell them to wear a black suit, they should know what to do.  This is also a great choice because a black suit comes in handy in a job interview.

    Unless. . . .

I just have to tell you this.  I think your FI's choice of suit looks like Anthony the sailor from "Sweeney Todd."  Velvet will stand out.  Also, I do not think velvet is appropriate for daytime.  If you and he like it, more power to you and to each her own, but he will look very different from your groomsmen - and if thats okay with you, its all good - you be offbeat.  Normally the only thing different between the groom and the groomsmen is the boutineer.

Differences in a black suit like lapels, fit, cut, buttons won't make a difference, but what you have there is extreme (double breasted velvet is very last century - I mean 2 centuries ago.)

    Is it a goth wedding?

Great for a goth wedding!  If so, A+    Would look great next to beatlejuice stripes and black lace parasols. (Take it from me, I'm in a goth band.  Yes really.)

It is what he wants, and I am fine with that. I have suggestted he consider finding one in a different material, we will see what happens.

[QUOTE]It's very Beatles.  Early Beatles. It's SO not something I'd be comfortable with, but as you pointed out, it's his style.  The bigger concern is that most groomsmen, when told to wear a suit, will wear something more conventional.  This suit really does look like a costume, and "normal" suits will look odd next to it.  Also, what is your dress like?

Beatles would definitely be acceptable :) I realize they will be in more conventional suits, and that's fine. I'm not like "ZOMG that have to match!". Most of our photos will be candids. I can definitely see where those not used to a style like this would be surprised by the choice, but I don't think anyone who knows FI would think twice about it. I suggested finding the cut in a different material, so we'll see. If it ends up being what he really truly wants, then that's fine. My dress is Oleg Cassini CWG377, it's an empire waist mermaid.
