Men's wedding bands. Help please :)

Neither of us are really jewelry people, so I figured I would ask some of your opinoins.

What is the most durable wedding band?  Gold, tungsten, what?  He works with his hands all day on cars. I deffinatly want to get something that will last, but I'm afraid I will end up getting the wrong thing.

Opinions please :)

  • My FI works with his hands too....he went with a black tungsten. We used the brides deal at JVL Jewelry making it only $25. He loves it but of course isn't wearing it yet. ;)

I'd recommend him not wearing his ring at all if around machinery. No matter what metal you get or what work you do, the metal can get scratched. Gold is easiest to work with, but that also means it scratches very easily. Platinum gets scratched as well, but won't get the dents that gold can. No experience with tungsten, but I've heard it's fine.
  • Thanks for the help!
  • If he's working with heavy machinery he should probalby remove any jewelery (watches and rings) for safety.  If you're just talking about doing gardening work or something else that doesn't involve heavy machinery, then really it doesn't matter.

If you are both the sentimental type and want him to wear the same ring for ever and ever, then I would recommend gold or platinum (expensive) that can be resized or have scratches polished out.

Tungsten and Titanium are both extremely light-weight and tough, but they cannot be rersized or polished (though they are less likely to scratch or bend).  Some people will tell you that if you are in an accident and have to have to your rings cut off, tungsten and titanium cannot be cut off. This isn't true (my sister is an ER doc and they cut off these rings all the itme).   We found a Tungsten ring for my fiance that is shiny and looks like white gold, but it is lightweight and comes in a comfort fit (which most guys like).  I think it was about $200.  If he ever needs a different size, we'll just buy him a new ring.

  • We are in the same situation. FI will rarely end up wearing the ring so we are looking at JVL. Surprisingly Walmart also has a few nice looking options..

  • We also went the JVL Jewelry route.  (use the code BRIDES at checkout and your ring is $25 dollars!)  H is the type that would take his ring off to fidgit with it and set it down somewhere and lose it.

Just FYI - their rings are definitely more of a gunmetal color, not a bright platinum color.
  • I really like the look of tungsten ones and they are by far one of the most durable ones. Plus, they're typically really affordable. Here's a great source: http://www.tungstenworld.com/Tungsten-Wedding-Bands/
