Renting a Suit??

I need some guidance on this one - Saw some great reviews and even had our wedding consultant recommend a place for my groom and the groomsmen to rent their suits (daytime wedding, so we're going with suits instead of tuxes). They're $150 to rent (jacket, shirt, pants, shoes, tie) then $60 more if you want to purchase the suit. I mention this to my mom so my dad can his suit from the same place if he wants. She (and my dad) freak out because they're saying $210 for a suit to purchase is really cheap and they're thinking it will look bad next to my expensive dress. It seemed to me like that was the standard pricing, aside from the suits you can purchase at a department store. Anyone know why these suits would be cheaper and should we be concerned? I'm thinking fit is most important, but now my mom has me all worried. Should we get a separate expensive suit for the groom somewhere else? I don't know whether I should be worried or not!

Re: Renting a Suit??

  • Just like most things, a lower price suit will lack the materials and craftmanship of a more expensive suit.  Are you able to look at one before you rent?
  • Would you be buying a suit that has been been worn and rented out before?

  • The pricing does seem a little off.  We're only spending a little more than that to rent tuxes.... but I know suits are really expensive.  I think FI's nice suit cost somewhere around $400 when he bought it.  Was that a sale price or is that their standard price?  I would definately second asking to see one.  Maybe even see if you could take your dress in and look at the two next to each other?  If it looks okay- I'd buy it.
  • So is the rental price normal? And is the low price to purchase just because it's been worn before? If that's the case then the price doesn't necessarily reflect on the quality of the original never been worn suit. I understand a pre-worn suit will be cheaper, and my fiance isn't required to purchase the suit (except they do give it to him to keep for free as part of a deal). Sorry, I'm just really worried about this because I don't know anything about men's clothing.

  • Is it an independent store or part of a larger chain?  Have you looked for reviews for the store?
  • Yeah, it's an independent store, they have a few in their chain locally, and I did find a number of reviews, all great, so I thought we'd be in good hands.

  • You can usually rent tux's for around that price but I have found that the rental suits/tux's are really made from cheaper material and will not last well.  My fiance actually just bought a suit today from Bloomingdales that he can use again.  It was Hugo Boss originally $900 but it was marked doen and 50% off.  By the time all the discounts were applied the suit is $230.  I would either just rent them or if you wan to buy a suit there are a lot of great sales.  Lord & Taylor also had some great buys.
