boutionniere question

We were talking about the male attendant attire the other night and we couldn't decide on what we wanted for boutionnieres... Left us wondering if we should have them at all...

What are people's thoughts on having/not having boutionnieres?

I think the reason to have one is to distinguish the wedding party -the people who are being honored by the bride and groom- from everyone else. Sure they'll be wearing a specific colored vest/tie, more than likely. But at the same time, that's a distinguishment that they paid for probably out of their own pockets. The boutoinniere is kind of like a thank you and kind of like a "Hey, look at this guy. He's really special to us." symbol. While I don't think it would be mean not get them one, I do think it would be much nicer of you to get them. FWIW, my mom, FH, and I could not agree on any way a boutionniere would look good when we firsg started talking about it, but when we went to the florist, he had some great ideas that we all loved.

We are doing boutonnier's but I'm considering not doing flowers for them.  I found some great ideas which do not use flowers but feathers, buttons etc.  My FI isn't really a flower guy.  But I agree with CourtneyBC on boutonniere's being a way to distinguish the groomsmen.

We are doing pocket squares instead of the bouts. FI and his friends would end up taking the bouts off after the ceremony because they are annoying to them. They would much prefer the pocket squares.

If it's a monetary standpoint, bouts are the cheapest arrangements of the wedding, so cutting them out will not save you much money.

We're not having boutoinnieres because neither of us like them, so FI chose to have his GM wear pocket squares that come with the tux rental.
