What is taffeta? Do I want a dress made of it?

hello ladies!
I'm shopping around online for dresses and I'm wondering what is taffeta? I seem to remember trying on a taffeta dress but they all seem to blur together so can't specifically remember it.
Is it decent, pretty fabric? I'm getting married in Las Vegas in August will I melt in it?
Thanks!!

Taffeta is a fabric that can be made of either natural or synthetic fibers. It's lightweight (but not as light as something like chiffon or charmeuse), has a stiff texture (sometimes crinkly), and has a sheen. Some versions of it are shinier than others.
  • You can google it too, but here's a sample

  • My BM dresses were taffeta, if it helps to see pics.  PIB.
  • My dress is taffeta and I love it because it's a relatively stiff version with a beautiful texturized sheen to it and it makes that nice swishing noise when I walk in it.
  • Thank you all! Here's one of the many dresses I'm considering in case you wondered. http://www.etsy.com/listing/27619481/custom-made-1950s-reproduction-strapless

  • I personally don't like taffeta, I dont like the way it feels against my skin. But I am very particular. You could go to a fabric store and see what the different fabrics are like.

Ha, when I was trying on dresses the saleperson kept telling me how brides love taffeta because it makes that noise. I thought she was just being weird but I guess I was wrong!
  • I was told that sometimes brides don't like that noise; that taffetta is a really "noisy" fabric. But it seems to be very popular nonetheless. It is pretty though. Usually gowns are lined with another more comfortable fabric when they're made of taffeta, so I don't know how comfortable/uncomfortable it is.

I'm not a fan of it. It really is just personal preference.  I don't feel like it's as 'dressy' as satin. And i HATE the noise.  All the dresses I like the style of seem to be in taffeta, but I can't get past the fact that I feel like I'm wearing a wrinkled curtain or windbreaker or something. You can't do anything without it making noise!
