how to clean rings

I have a 14K yelow gold ring with a solitare diamond and I'd like to know how to clean it properly.  I've read that a paste of baking soda and water can do it, but will that scratch the gold?  I currently take it back to the jewlers to be cleaned and inspected every few months but I'd like to maintain it in between those times.

Re: how to clean rings

  • My jeweler recommended simple jewelry cleaner that you can buy at any jewelry store or department store (I got mine at Target).  I dont use it often but when I do, it takes 15 seconds to shine it back up.

  • I use white toothpaste and a toothbrush.
  • I bought the cleaning solution at BB&B.  I dip it in for a minute and it's back to being all sparkly.
  • I use windex and an soft toothbrush, Works like a charm.

This, my jeweler actually gave me a bottle. I was warned NEVER to use toothpaste/toothbrush, it's and abrasive and can scratch.

  • I second the Windex and toothbrush (though I use a nail brush, lol). Occasionally when I'm in a hurry, I'll just use the nail brush with a little bit of baby soap while I'm in the shower, which also works pretty well. I think it's the brushing more so than what cleaner you use that does the trick.

  • My jeweler warned me also never to use toothpaste as it's abrasive.  He said that the best way to clean my ring is to put some warm water and Dawn dish soap in a glass or bowl and drop my ring in it for 30 mins (or longer, up to you) to loosen any dirt or grease that's built up.  Then I use a toothbrush with the Dawn solution to get into the crevices.  I rinse it in warm water, dry it with a soft towel and it comes out looking great.

  • I use a jewlery cleaner once a week. Fiance is talking about getting us one of the ultrasonic cleaners though.

This is what I do as well.

  • My jeweler told me to use some boiling water and dish soap.  I just pour the water in a coffee mug with a few drops of dawn dish soap and let it sit for about 10 minutes. I then take a toothbrush to get in to all the crevices.  Looks brand new everytime!
