Dress fit

Has anyone had a problem with losing too much weight/inches so their dress was way too big?

I know this is not the typical problem, and I have not lost any weight yet but I ordered my dress in a very big size (recommended by the consultant) and Im super worried it will be way too big. I have heard if a dress is taken in too much it loses its original look.

Anyone out there with this problem??

Re: Dress fit

  • Have you even seen the dress yet? It may not be as big as you think. Bridal sizes run much smaller than street size.
  • It has not come in yet no, so I may be worrying for nothing, but I am trying to lose weight for my own benefit so if it was ordered at the size I was then I dont know how it will fit when I get it.

No, it was not a cutom order, I just ordered a 16. I hope it fits well like yours! Im mostly worried about the bust because it is already a size too big in the bust and that is where most of the detail is.

Just remember that US women's clothing sizes have changed so much over time and the wedding dress sizes haven't.  We operate with "vanity sizing" <LINK> in our stores.

I'm a 2 at Banana Republic, J. Crew, and other stores.  However, I can barely fit into two size 8 dresses my mother bought in the 1960s.
  • Im really just more worried about too  many alterations changing the look of the dress if I lose too many inches.

<div>Yea everyone is getting fatter. I'm a size 4 normally and my wedding dress is an 8. People say the dresses are just made smaller, but really we just got bigger and the wedding dress sizes haven't changed. JCrew, Banana and Gap are the worst offenders. I'll put on a 4 skirt and it will be huge and I know I am a perfectly average weight for my height- even if this was 10 years ago, I'd probably be an 8 and if you are an 8 you are probably really a 12. </div><div>
</div><div>It helps pretending the dresses are just made small though.</div>
  • I have heard that they can take it in up to two dress sizes before it distorts the original look of the dress.  I wouldn't worry too much about it.  I think you will be fine to not lose the original look.  And I was also told that in the case of it being too small, there is an inch on each side that can be taken in.  At least that was with the style dress I bought, not sure about other styles or designers but it all sounded pretty normal to me when the consultant was telling me all of this.
