Colored tie for corset back dress?

I went dress shopping for the first time this weekend and I think I'm going to order one of the dresses I tried on.  It's a lovely ivory a-line dress with a halter top and corset back.  I'm very pale and feel a little wierd wearing an all ivory dress with no other color in it.  The beading isn't condusive to adding a sash.  I'm wondering, would it look ok to do a colored tie for the corset back?  I tend to favor dark colors like burgundy, charcoal, and black.  I feel like something subtle, like a blush pink or light grey/silver would probably work, but those aren't very "me" colors.  I also tried googling to see if anyone has done this without much luck.  Has anyone seen anything like this?  The consultant kept telling me to "think outside the box" and I guess this is what I came up with, haha.  For reference, this is the dress I'm leaning towards: http://www.venusbridal.com/bridals/venus-woman/VW8624

I actually did this. I removed the white ribbon and added a pink one. Everyone thought is was unique and different.

I'm at work now but will post a pic for you later on tonight so you can see it.

  • I think silver would look best if you're going to use a color, but if it's not "you" then choose what you'd like. I agree with Lia. It's not my style but you should do what makes you feel good.

If you're going to do this, I advise buying a very strong ribbon. Having your corset tied correctly and tight enough is what supports the whole dress. You want to make sure that your dress fits properly using the ribbon you purchase.

I will add that I purchased the corset directly from AA because you can't just use any ribbon.  They make it in about 60 different colors.

  • Thanks for the responses.  I was more or less expecting to be told that I'm crazy, but maybe it's not such a terrible idea afterall.
  • A girlfriend of mine did this.  It looked really nice.  She did it the same color has her BM dresses.

It was sort of a coffee color; but I think bolder colors will look great too.

  • Here are some pics. The ribbon was an exact match to the belts on my BM dresses. I also wore pink shoes.

Thanks. I wanted a pink wedding dress but my family had a heart attack about not wearing white. This was the compromise with my mom and grandma. I liked that it added unexpected color but also that my front view pics were all white.

  • That's such a fun idea!! Will it be coordinated at all with your bridesmaid colors?? How fun!
  • Those pix looks great, Hoboken!

I would like my BMs to be wearing a dark red/burgundy, so I will probably try to coordinate with them.  I'm also reconsidering light grey or silver... I think that might complement the beading on the dress nicely.  My wedding isn't until the end of September, so I guess I have some time to figure out the color.

Thanks again for the feedback -- I really appreciate it!

</div><div>I think it's a great idea. I'm planning on adding a sash to mine or doing the same thing you're doing if the dress doesn't look good with a sash. I'd just make sure that it somehow incorporates your wedding colors or maybe even matches the bridesmaids. It won't seem as crazy or random. But definitely, go for it!

Where did you buy the ribbon? Or did you have someone dye it for you?? Thanks!

I did end up using a colored tie. You can use any double-faced satin ribbon or grosgrain ribbon (this was per my seamstress). I don't have pictures back yet or I'd include one. Everyone except my mom loved the contrasting tie - I got tons of compliments on it.

I bought it through Alfred Angelo.
