Timeline for major alterations to my dress?

Hi Everyone,

I purchased a sample dress for my wedding dress and need to have it taken in several sizes. How many months in advance should I take this to a seamstress?

The wedding is in November althought I would need the dress in October because I'm travelling for work right before the wedding.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Re: Timeline for major alterations to my dress?

  • I would start in August.  It seems like you need major alterations and that could take some time, but you don't want to start too early and then run the risk of your body changing as you get closer to your wedding and then your dress not fitting right.  My suggestion would be to talk with your chosen seamstress and see what they say as to when to start alterations.

  • Since there's so much work to be done, I'd talk to a few seamstresses now so you can get a realistic idea of how much this is going to cost and how much time they'll need to complete the work.

I also bought a sample dress and it only needs to be taken in 1 size, hemmed, have cups sewen in and a bustle added and it's still going to cost me $300. My first appointment is in early August for my October wedding.

My dress needed to be taken in at the boobs, crinoline added, twenty point bustle added, and cups sewn = all very similar to what Achi needed done, but my seamstress needed 2 weeks.  I did my alterations in April for my May 5th wedding.

My point?  Go the seamstress who will be doing the work and ask her what kind of timeline she would like.  You have to balance having it on time with your schedule, her schedule, and not doing it too early for fear your body might change over time.  None of us are going to be able to tell you with certainty.

    Good luck!

  • I got all of my alterations done in March-April for my August wedding. I'm not intending to gain or lose any weight so it made sense to get it out of the way. I think generally its a good idea to have your final fitting a couple weeks before the wedding so I'd start a month or two before that.
  • Thank you so much for the advice everyone!!!!
