Could really use some feedback.......

I'm not sure what to do. I found my gown at a bridal salon, and really liked it. I ordered it in my size, and when the dress came in, I went in to put it on, and within ten minutes my inner arms were covered in scratches and welts from the beading on the bodice. This never happened with the sample. I brought it up to my consultant, and she said to take it home and  "Crush the beads with a pair of pliers", and that that's what they would normally do. It sounded odd, but I didn't pursue it. Well, I always planned to have my dress altered outside of the salon (much cheaper), and my seamstress has since told me that there is no way to fix this issue without substantially altering the looks of the dress. She will not "crush" the beads, says it's outrageous, and has mentioned removing the beading, covering the beading, or making a jacket to wear with the dress....all which will change the looks of the gown significantly.  I spoke to her today (she is a friend of mine), and she said that she loves the dress, but doesn't see me being happy in it, whatever we decide to do. It's not going to be the dress I chose.

My fiancee' is upset, and wants to try to return the dress, and look for a different one. He doesn't see why we should pay so much money for a dress that is essentially unwearable, and believes it is defective, and should be returned. I contacted the manufacture, who sent a response stating simply, have your alterations dept. take care of it.

My fiancee' has been seriously ill, and there have been other matters in my life that have needed my attention, but I realize that time is running out, and I need to get going if I need to get another dress. I'm not sure the salon will take it back, and I had a hard time finding a dress in the first place, so am leery about starting that process over. However, I'm just not sure what to do.  I don't think it's right that I can't wear my brand new dress as it was made. I would just like to hear some feedback on what you ladies think.

Thanks.

  • I had a very similar problem. I had a gown totally covered in beads at the top and under the arms and my seamstress took very sheer organza and covered the beading under my arms. In portrait photos you can't see it at all, and in most of the candids you can't tell either. I'm sure your seamstress would be able to do that for you. Good luck!!

My dress also had some beading right under the arms and I ended up not even noticing it on the wedding day. The likely hood that you will be able to return it is pretty low. I've never heard of a store that accepts returns on dresses. The above suggestion is a good one that I would consider before buying a new dress, especially if you like this dress and the beading under the arms is the only problem.

ETA: The sample probably didn't do this because it's been tried on hundreds of times and the beads have been worn down
  • I went dress shopping this weekend for the first time and had this problem with one of the samples I tried on.  The consultant said their seamstress usually rubs the offending crystals/beading with white wax to prevent irritation.
