BMaid dress length has to match mine?

So, I have seen in articles on the Knot that the bridesmaids dresses ought to be floor length if the bride is wearing a long gown. this seems strange to me considering that most brides wear a long dress but most of the bridesmaids dresses i've seen are tea length or cocktail. my wedding is a saturday night at a somewhat fancy place, but i had not been specifically looking for my bmaids to wear long dresses. will it be a major faux pas if they wore tea length?

Re: BMaid dress length has to match mine?

  • Not at all. They should coordinate with you in terms of formality though.

  • What Ring said.

I've never heard that length rule before and it sounds ridiculous.
  • Never heard that. My BMs decided to wear long. I would have been fine if they chose short as long as their all the same length! My dress is long, of course.
  • the only thing I would say about length is that the length of the BM's dresses shouldn't surpass that of the bride, that's about it!

  • great--thanks!! i didn't think i was crazy (at least on this question!)

  • Yeah, if the bride isn't wearing floor length, then the bridesmaids shouldn't be either.  As long as their dresses are formal enough for the event, length isn't a huge issue.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • It's the formality thing. If you are having a very formal event or your dress is very formal, your bridesmaids shouldn't be wearing cotton sundresses.

And since the formality of a dress is usually mirrored by its length, this is why longer dresses are usually paired with formal wedding gowns. However, nice cocktail dresses can be fine too. It all just depends on your event and what you want.
  • I don't think so. My girls are wearing cocktail length dresses - but our wedding will be more of a party theme. I will match their length at the reception when I change into my short reception dress. But I think any length is fine - just match the formality and theme of the wedding with their dress...yours obviously will be the center of attention so theirs just needs to "fit in" with your vision no matter the length.
