Mixing Fabrics

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to choose bridesmaids dresses and I really want my bridesmaids to like them. I'm just having a hard time finding colors that I like that go with fabric that I like.  Well Fabric that the girls will like.  I have two girls that are a little bit over weight and I don't want them to feel uncomfortable and everyone keeps telling me that satin is not a good fabric for someone over weight. At David's Bridal I LOVE their Peacock color, but only in the satin really...but what do people think about mixing fabrics? Could I do the satin with chiffon? I'm having trouble because when I find a fabric that I like, i don't like the colors as much.  Any advice for making everyone happy?

  • I'm on the chubby side....and the best I can offer is that satin CAN be really bad but it depends a lot on how the dress is constructed.  If it's an a-line, fully lined, and altered correctly, then it's not too bad.  Shiney fabrics can be rough for us chubby girls though, but a matte satin could be really nice.

I think mixing fabrics would be just fine.  You could let the girls pick any style/fabric they want as long as it's Peacock -- then they could all pick something they feel comfortable and beautiful in:-)

</div><div>As a fellow chubby girl, I agree with all of this. Fit and cut are way more important to having something look good and not cheap or unflattering. </div><div>
</div><div>Also, be advised that even the same color from the same store can look really different in a different fabric. Chiffon especially has a way of making colors look different. Again, as someone with a little more meat on my bones, chiffon is even less flattering than satin because there's no real way to line it or structure it.

  • They lady at David's bridal told me that since my dress is satin I would need to pick the same fabric. The different fabrics would look weird in pictures. I wouldn't want to force anyone to wear satin. Unless they wear shapewear underneath.
