Ring size changes?

Did/does your ring size change?

I'm asking because my engagement ring was an 8, the size I usually wear, and six months after receiving it I had to have it sized down to a 7.5 because it was spinning like crazy. Now its super loose again.

I ordered my wedding band in a 7.5, and its loose, but as its just a plain band (my engagement ring has a 3 carat solitaire) it doesn't spin as much.  I could go down a size in it and have it fit a little more comfortably, but I'm worried that if I do so I may end up going back up in size and having to get it resized AGAIN!

The factors: I've lost 30 lbs on my 5'8" frame, and I will in all honestly probably gain 10 of that back.  I received my engagement ring in May, and had it adjusted smaller in January.  Its still loose though.  I'm not sure if its the weather or weight loss or something else that made my finger shrink, or if something will make it swell up again.

Does anyone have any experience in this?  Should I adjust my wedding band size?

Re: Ring size changes?

  • I would definitely say that the ring size is effected by weight loss/gain.  Since you have lost 30 pounds that would definitely make your rings fit a bit looser.  My engagement ring fits nicely but still spins because it is top heavy due to the diamond (mine is only a bit over a carat so it isn't nearly as top heavy as yours!).

How loose is your ring?  Does it feel like it may fall off your hand or does it just spin easily?  If it feels like it will fall off I would have it resized but if it just feels a bit loose you have to remember that since it is getting to be summer and the days are getting hotter your fingers will swell and the last thing you want is to have a ring on that is super tight.

[QUOTE]I've gone from a 5.5 down to a 5 for both my e-ring and wedding band. My fingers shrink/swell all.the.time when my body temperature changes.  They sometimes still spin as a size 5, and are a smidge tight when my fingers swell.  I tried a 5 1/4 size, but that was too loose. I feel like I can't win on ring size. If I am going to be doing outdoor activities for an extended period of time, I usually take them off so they don't get really uncomfortable when my fingers swell. <strong>A big factor in your case seems to be weight loss. Maybe wait until your weight levels out and then get them sized?  Our jeweler told me continually having your rings resized can weaken the setting and could cause a stone to fall out.

    This!

And I noticed after I got married once I had both my rings on they dont spin that much anymore. But, as Duds pointed out I'm cold they sping, or hot my fingers swell.  Ask you jeweler for an expander to wear until after your wedding.

  • I lost weight between the last time I got a ring and when my FI proposed.  20 lbs to be exact.  And my ring size went from a 7 to a 6.25.  I'd say wait until your weight levels out before getting them resized a bit.  As long as it just spins and doesn't feel like it's going to fall off, you should be fine.  The weather can affect your fingers since they can swell in the heat of summer.  Mine have started.  I'd just wait a bit and see what happens weight-wise before you decide to have the rings resized again.

  • Thanks ladies!  I had no idea that weight loss could affect ring size that drastically!  I lost 6 inches in my waist and only half an inch in my butt, so I didn't think fingers would change sizes all that much.  My ring slips around a lot, but its not in danger of falling off.  The only thing I was concerned about is that my FI and I are getting our rings engraved (with our favorite characteristic of the other) and revealing what we chose after we're married.  I would hate to have that erased when its resized.  But my super serious no sodium no carb diet is going out the window in July, so chances are that half size of extra room will come in handy.
  • I just brought mine in yesterday to get taken down a full size!  I have lost weight and it was spinning so badly I had to wear a thin ring over it to hold it on or else it would fly off.

  • I reccomend you wait until your weight levels out and see how the summer affects your hands too. You can always get a clip in sizer too. This is what I'm going to do for the winter months. We are actually buying my ring a whole size big due to medical reasons. I currently wear a ring that spins a little on that finger, but my e-ring will be much more top heavy (stone is roughly 4 times the size of the current ring) the band is 3 times as wide as the current ring as well  so we anticipate it should fit the same. The spinning isnt too much of an issue for me because I'm used to the ring and naturally push it back before it fully spins. If we have issues we will send it in to pull a quarter size out next year when we order the wedding band, but we want to see how it goes through the seasons first since my weight fluxes with the on and off season as well. I'd wait and see how the seasons treat you, and when your weight stabalizes as stated. The size may also be a little different with the wedding band next to it as well.
