Question regarding having wedding dress a year ahead!!!

I chose my dress, and ordered it, and they said that I should receive it by end of june or early july. My wedding is not until may 18th, 2013, and my question is should I be concerned about storing it for nearly a year? I am getting a garment bag for the dress from Davids bridal, but I'm concerned about it discoloring or anything before the wedding. Also, what do I need to do right before the wedding so that it's not wrinkled?

Please help!!!!

Re: Question regarding having wedding dress a year ahead!!!

  • Nope no need for concern.  Just keep it in a breathable (fabric) garment bag like pp suggested and have it freshened up right before the big day, and lay it flat or use the loops that are probably built into the dress to hang it from.  My gown was stored for 20 months hanging by the loops and it was just fine.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I got my gown a year and a half before my wedding.  It's been hanging for 5 months now with no issues, in the garment bag.  All you really need to do is get it steamed before the wedding, but other than that it should be fine if you keep it in the garment bag.

  • I bought my gown last October for this September.  The salon has been keeping the dress for me in storage.  I recently had to change my wedding date to August 2013 so I decided to go ahead and pick up my gown now because I doubt the salon will keep my dress for another year.  LOL!  I am just going to lay it flat in a garment bag under my bed for the reasons posted above.

It can make you weak and strong simultaneously.

  • Depending on the material, you may want to lay it flat so it doesn't stretch out from being on the hanger for so long!  I'd ask the bridal gallery!
  • I was supposed to get married back when I was 20 and in college (Thank God that didn't work out, huge mistake) I never got very far in the wedding planning, but I did get a dress. We took it out to see what condition it was in so we could sell it, since I bought a new dress for my upcoming wedding, and save for a few wrinkles it's in perfect condition! At one point I even shoved the whole thing, in the garment bag, into a rubbermaid container. There aren't even creases from being in there! Your dress should be as white as the day you bought it!

The only thing I would caution, and it happened to my friend, is that she bought her dress early and then lost some weight. It was enough to make her dress too big. David's Bridal WILL allow you to exchange your dress for the same one in a different in size, if they have it on the floor, otherwise you will need to get alterations.

Not to scare you, but keep it in mind, since they don't really tell you that when you buy it. Even when you buy it way before your wedding.
  • Thank you all for your help!!!! Defiitely eases my mind quite a bit!!!
