baby bump...

So, my FSIL just found out today that she's pregnant. At my wedding she'll probably be 6.5 - 7 months along. Now, I've never been pregnant, nor have I really been close to someone who is, so I'm not sure how serious or how huge a baby bump can be at that point. All of the BM's have already bought their dresses (FSIL included) - but thankfully she already bought hers a bit big. I know that there's going to be a baby growing there, so her stomach won't be flat but she doesn't want to have to buy a new dress. Could she wear spanx for a few hours so she won't have to buy a new dress or will that affect the baby somehow?

Probably a strange question lol...

Re: baby bump...

  • Women carry their weight differently during pregnancy.  I know some women who didn't show at all until the third trimester when they got massive, and some who carried the weight pretty evenly throughout, and everything in between.  Especially if this is her first child, she won't really know what her body will do until it does it.

She should really talk to her doctor about the Spanx, but it doesn't seem like a good idea.  Do you really think it's worth it to risk the health and safety of a child just so the mother doesn't have to buy a new dress?  A good seamstress can let the dress out so it fits, or she can buy a maternity dress in a coordinating color off-the-rack right before the wedding.  If she's pregnant enough that the original dress isn't remotely going to fit, then she'll be big enough that no one would question her being in a different dress.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. • Exactly what aerinpegadrak said. A baby on the way is so exciting. Don't make her feel bad bc she may not fit into her dress. Just play it by ear as she gets further along.
  • I agree wearing spanx wouldn't be comfortable for her, nor a good idea to be pushing on her stomach to try to hide it. Most woman at 6 or 7 months have a large stomach, although like PP said some woman do carry differently.

She will likely need to get her dress altered to be bigger, if its a little big already. But a few sizes up, maybe they can do an exchange for a bigger dress

Here is the google images for pregnant woman at 7 months. As you can see most are very large

  • Thanks everyone!

and MissySue: I would NEVER try to make her feel bad!! She was the one who asked about it and said especially with a baby on the way she couldn't go out buying another dress. I just told her I'd ask and see what her options might be so she might not have to buy a new dress. I'm totally excited about a new neice/nephew!
  • Remember that if she has to buy another dress, she can always resell the original to try to recoup her costs.  Or you could be the totally awesome aunt and cover part or all of the cost of buying a new dress.

  • In most cases, the bump will be quite noticeable by 6.5-7 months and Spanx won't really make much of a difference. Just play it by ear and be prepared to buy a new dress if that one can't be altered to fit. Other than changing the order (if that's possible), there really isn't anything you can do now until the dresses come in and you're much closer to your wedding date. Pregnant bodies grow VERY quickly.
