How high is too high?

Clearly I am in a shoe jive.  Sorry for the many posts, but I am off today and doing some wedding planning.  As I continue the search for the perfect wedding shoe, I am hoping you ladies can give some advice.  How high is too high for a wedding heel?  I know this is a somewhat personal question (i.e. for someone who never wears heels even 1" could be a lot).  But for the average woman, what do you think?  Did anyone have a terrible experience with a 3" or 4" heel?  Thanks.

Actually, my dress is tea length, so I don't have to worry about the hem, but I feel that the focus will really be on the shoes.  By the same token, the focus will also be on me hobbling around if they are too unconfortable.

My shoes were about 3".  I got them at David's Bridal and they were comfortable all night.  My only issue was that I forgot to scuff the bottoms of them, so I was slipping around on the dance floor.
