Matching Guys Attire to Formality of Wedding

I'm getting married in late September 2011 at a barn. Our wedding is somewhat informal, with black, yellow, and white as the colors. I'm also using a lot of fall colors. After much debate I decided to just set the girls of the WP loose and get a black tea length dress of their choosing, and I'd provide matching sashes to use somewhere on the dress (under bust, at waist, etc). My own dress is very simple, more of a destination wedding design.

When it comes to the guys, I'm stumped. My FI desperately wants to wear a black suit/tux, as well as the guys, but I think it's going to be way too formal. I also think he'll be way too formal next to me, but I want him to be happy too. I've considered a zillion options from vests, to tan suits, to shirt/tie, to suspenders..

So question is, am I right to think that black suits/tuxes would be too formal given the tone of everyone else? Which alternative would be best? Is there any way to accomodate him in a suit, with a more relaxed, casual wedding party?

What a pain he is, he worries more about his clothes then I do most of the time :) But I love him anyway.
