Wedding dress, altar it or no? how do you know?

Ok, SO i went into Davids Bridal last weekend, tried on anywhere from 8-11 dresses. Ended up choosing the last one. It was everything I had in mind, except the top. I had no clue what neckline was best, so my mind was open for anything. Come to find out, sweetheart looked the best, but the dress that I fell in love with was a scoop neckline. I'm big busted, so the dress I had on was around 2 sizes too small in the bust (but perfect everywhere else). So I couldn't truely get the "vision" of how it would look in my size. The only problem, these two points on either side of the neckline.

Everyone says you shouldn't have to change anything on your dream dress... but It has these weird points on both sides of the scoop neckline, and i hate them. I saw a that dress on another bride that had worn it prior and I really hate the points. The store cannot change them due to designer contract.. but I don't know if I should risk buying the Dress I am in LOVE with (minus the points on the neckline)... hoping another seamstress can fix them :(  because what if someone can fix the points and i don't like how it looks after it is altered? what should I do!!!!

  • Do you have a link to the dress so we can see what you are talking about?

And you'll probably need to take a picture of the dress to a seamstress to know for sure if it can be changed.

  • Do you mean it's strapless and comes to a point at each side? You might be able to have a seamstress tuck those points under to round out the neckline. But take pics of the dress to a seamstress first to be sure.
  • I think I know exactly what dress you're talking about at DB.  I tried on the same one and also liked the overall dress, but not the points. The consultant that was working with me told me that several brides have had the points taken out so that its more straight across.  I would maybe ask another DB store?  Ask a seamstress?
  • I'm not being snarky but you get married at an altar but you alter a dress.

I'm sure an independent seamstress could tell you if it's possible to do what you want or not if you took in a few pics.  Ask and get definite answers before you buy the dress - if it's not possible, keep looking!

  • My dress will have two alterations made:  a semi-sweetheart neckline made from a straight neckline and a ribbon moved from mid-waist to empire.

I don't think there's anything wrong with making small tweaks to make your dress feel more like you.  If DB can't make the changes, definitely take a picture to a seamstress and see what she says.  The seamstress at my dress shop said that she could do both of my alterations (we discussed before I purchased the dress).

  • I also know the exact dress you're talking about. I really liked it... except for the points. I was told they could be altered to be more rounded. If you love everything about the dress except that area, I say go for it!

This is the Link to the dress.... the points do not look as harsh in the picture are they are on the person... I just am freaked to buy the dress...and "hope a seamstress can fix it." Or even trusting one that says she can do it... then it turns out horrible. Because DB said they can't can it via designers contracts. It wouldn't be as bad, but there is beading ALL along the neckline that would have to be altered too :( And i love that part!!  Thanks for all the advice girls!! And ya like some of you said... it is perfect accept the points!! haha!!
