I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'm desperate!
My fiance had my ring custom made at a private jewelry store. Tonight we went into Jared's to look for wedding bands and the girl offered to clean my engagement ring for me. After looking at it under the microscope she said that the center stone is loose and they can't clean it. She recommended I don't wear it and put it in a baggy for me. She did say that they could tighten it for $30 or do a multi-stone tightening for $60.
Is this them just trying to get money out of me? It will be a huge inconvenience for me to get to the store where the ring was designed and I hate not wearing it so I wanted to check to see if this has happened to anyone else or if the diamond is legitmately loose.
Thank you!!
Re: Went to Jared's, they said my diamond is loose
I had this problem with a ring from Kay, I ended up upgrading it to a different ring b/c everytime it got tightened, a couple weeks later it would get loose again. However, I could visibly see that it was loose.
Definitely don't wear it until you get it checked out! Good Luck!
1. Get your ring insured!
2. My local jeweler who appraised my ring cleans & inspects it for me for free. I just drop in and they take a look at it on the spot.
3. NEVER go to those cheap jewelers in the mall to get your ring cleaned. They can easily switch out your diamond for a fake (again, I've heard of this happening). Always only go to a reputable jeweler.
When we went back to the jewelry store the jeweler said that the setting picked by my H tends to not hold a cushion cut stone very well. The stone can shift and thus fall out on occassion. I was a bit peeved that they didn't say this when he first purchased the ring but I let it go. I was able to pick a different setting (one that holds the stone on both sides of the round corners of the cushion cut) and had them fix the ring for free.
Take your ring back to the original jeweler and have them fix it. Make sure that the setting picked is correct for the cut you have. And make sure to get that ring insured pronto!
