Went to Jared's, they said my diamond is loose

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'm desperate!

My fiance had my ring custom made at a private jewelry store. Tonight we went into Jared's to look for wedding bands and the girl offered to clean my engagement ring for me. After looking at it under the microscope she said that the center stone is loose and they can't clean it. She recommended I don't wear it and put it in a baggy for me. She did say that they could tighten it for $30 or do a multi-stone tightening for $60.

Is this them just trying to get money out of me? It will be a huge inconvenience for me to get to the store where the ring was designed and I hate not wearing it so I wanted to check to see if this has happened to anyone else or if the diamond is legitmately loose.

Thank you!!

  • No idea how legit their suggestion is, but I would definitely NOT wear it until you have it insured....just in case.
  • I'd probably suck it up and pay the $30 because it's worth the piece of mind.

  • Gotta be honest I would deal with the inconvenience and go back to the other jeweler, they should fix it now and for free. They should stand behind their merchandise

  • Did he get any type of insurance with your ring? I would take it back to the private jewelry store and they may be able to tighten it free of charge. If you can't take it to where he bought it (online, etc), then I would get a second opinion if you are nervous of them scamming you.

I had this problem with a ring from Kay, I ended up upgrading it to a different ring b/c everytime it got tightened, a couple weeks later it would get loose again. However, I could visibly see that it was loose.

Definitely don't wear it until you get it checked out! Good Luck!

  • Take it to a local jeweler! Like a family owned place. I work at a family owned jeweler and we don't charge even REMOTELY that much to tighten a diamond. Sometimes, if it just needs a little adjustment, we will even do it for free.

Check around for pricing. Certainly don't settle if it seems like that is too much. But for sure don't wear it til you get it fixed. If your diamond fell out that would be a tragedy!

  • Diamonds get loose - and that's how people usually lose their diamonds (yes, it's happened to people I know).  Usually it's the prong setting that starts to give.  I agree with PP comments.
    1. Get your ring insured!
    2. My local jeweler who appraised my ring cleans & inspects it for me for free.  I just drop in and they take a look at it on the spot.
    3. NEVER go to those cheap jewelers in the mall to get your ring cleaned.  They can easily switch out your diamond for a fake (again, I've heard of this happening).  Always only go to a reputable jeweler.
  • My H went to a family owned jewelry store about an hour away from where we live to buy my e-ring.  I had it for about a month and one day when I was just about to leave for a baseball game I put my hand in my pocket to pull out a piece of paper and when I pulled my hand out the diamond was gone.  Luckily I foundn it and place the ring and stone in a baggy.

When we went back to the jewelry store the jeweler said that the setting picked by my H tends to not hold a cushion cut stone very well.  The stone can shift and thus fall out on occassion.  I was a bit peeved that they didn't say this when he first purchased the ring but I let it go.  I was able to pick a different setting (one that holds the stone on both sides of the round corners of the cushion cut) and had them fix the ring for free.

Take your ring back to the original jeweler and have them fix it.  Make sure that the setting picked is correct for the cut you have.  And make sure to get that ring insured pronto!
