Kleinfeld

I am a huge Say Yes to the Dress fan, and was thinking of making a roadtrip(about 6 hours by car) to Kleinfeld for my dress. Has anyone else done this?  Is it worth it?

Re: Kleinfeld

  • Honestly, I think it's gimmicky. I've heard their service has gone way down since they're so in demand since the show. I'd spend your money elsewhere.
  • If you go, make a day of it and visit some of the other flagship salons like Pronovias or Amsale or Mark Ingram. I found better service and selection at those places. Kleinfeld was fun but really no different than any other big salon. I went there last and hoped to see gowns I hadn't seen before, and my consultant pulled the same 5 or 6 dresses I saw locally. And don't get caught up in the hype; my friend from Canada bought her gown there then decided it was the wrong dress. Two years later, it's still hanging in her closet with the tags on. Good luck!

  • I wouldn't suggest it. I found their service to be terrible and my consultant was pushy and a tad rude. Not worth the trip imo

I've also heard this.  It's sad - they say it used to be top-notch but now it's just resting on the show to carry it through.  Apparently all kinds of "Say Yes to the Dress" souvenirs are in the lobby and many feel it's tacky.
  • I went to Kleinfeld's since I live in NYC and work 4 blocks away, so I couldn't NOT go.  My mom and I went during a sample sale - the samples were crap (very worn, not a big selection).  So I mostly tried on non-sample dresses.  My consultant was very nice and it didn't feel gimmicky.  We were there on a Sunday morning in December.  The one thing I didn't like is that she kept bringing dresses over my price point.  I told her my budget was $2,500 max and most of dresses the dresses the consultant brought in were $3K+, including a dress that was $5K. I loved the dress, but wasn't going to spend twice my budget.  Honestly, I don't think it is worth a 6-hour drive.  But like PP said, if you do make the trip visit some of the other fantastic bridal stores in NY.  There are lots of boutiques, not just the big brands.  Someone recommended RK Bridal, which is a great place - tons of dresses from all different designers.

  • I was going to go, but after talking it over with my dad (since he's paying), he couldn't justify spending that much more on sales tax if I could get the same dress in NJ.

Haha - I said the same thing (from CT).  I actually went with the intention of finding the dress there and purchasing it elsewhere for that very reason.

  • On the last say yes to the dress episode I watched the consultant pulled two of the three dresses I actually tried on in my hometown. Including the one I bought. The novelty of it might be fun if you are going to make a day or weekend trip out if it. But if you're only making the trip to go there I say skip it.

You see this done a lot on the show.  I guess their thinking is that if you say the max you want to spend is $2500 what is another $500 if you absolutely love it.  Also, you see them put these brides into overly expensive dresses which are many times much nicer then the lower priced dresses and then the brides have a hard time going back down to those "cheap" $2000 dresses because they were put in a $6000 that they love.

I understand that the sales people work on commission but I think their tactics are pretty crappy.

Edit:  And very true about the sales tax.  I wouldn't buy a dress at 8% sales tax when I could buy it elsewhere for less.  Also, I am sure that their alteration charges are astronomical.

  • I got my dress from Kleinfeld, and while it was a really fun and exciting experience, I would only say to go if you have your eye on a Pnina, and the budget to match.

They told me the minimum for alterations was $595 - and you are required to pay that if you get your dress altered there.

  • I purchased my dress there and had a great experience. My consultant was excellent, she knew exactly which dresses to pull and never brought a single dress over my budget, most was actually much lower than my budget.

It was very intimidating walking in at first - the lobby was packed and they were filming an episode of SYTTD that day. But once I was in my room, everything was great. I ended up with a stunning Pnina Tornai ball gown, which I never expected I would like. If you live out of state, you can have the dress shipped to you so you don't need to pay sales tax. The alterations are a flat rate of $695 for pretty much anything you get done, other than completely redesigning the dress.
