Can I customize this dress?

I saw this dress online and I love the top, but I'd perfer a more fitted trumpt/mermaid fit on the bodice.  The price is well under my budget so I thought maybe I could have the fit customized and maybe add a bit of embelishment. 

Do you think it could be altered to more of a mermaid fit?

And please suggest any embelishments and places to find them!

It appears that it could be done given the type of fabric but I would take pictures to seamstresses and get their professional opinion.  I don't know how much customization David's bridal will do. 

Also great choice, it would look even more stunning with a mermaid look to it!

I would think that would work but ask a seamstress for sure very pretty

Definitely. Love the top, and the skirt is so simple that it shouldn't be difficult to modify at all. I would definitely look for an independent seamstress instead of using David's. Look for reviews on your local board.

I wouldn't embellish it, but it would definitely look great with a hair flower or other accessory.

I've sewn for over 40 years. Sometimes what seems like a "simple alteration" is not.

It would depend on how much of the dress from the empire waist to the area above the knee you would want to take in.......skin tight, or looser? It may require taking in on the sides AND making darts all the way down the front & back to take it in proportionately.

It's also difficult to tell from the back view pictures if the train is a separate piece, attached below the flower, or if it is all one piece with the skirt. If it is all one piece with the skirt, this would be a MAJOR alteration, and probably not worth the money.

If it will end up costing a lot I'm sure you can find something similar in the style you like, I've seen several around though I can't recall what designer they were for..

Thanks for the info Sue-n-Kevin. I've been thinking about the same thing... and my small train is attached. I say a little taking in would be worth it, I personally wouldn't do skin tight. Its a beautiful dress!

Hi Everyone!

This is my first post and yesterday I ordered my dress, it's a beautiful dress with all the elements I was looking for except the skirt is just a little too 'out' for me. Its described as A-line and I'd much prefer a sheath look, especially as I'll be wearing flat shoes, and I want to alter the dress to look less formal, I was originally going to go with more of a contemporary style but fell in love with the vintage feel of my gown.  It's a Maggie Sottero, with embellished antique rose lace and tulle over light gold satin.

I think I want the Satin under skirt bringing in to more of a sheath shape so that the lace is more flowy and drapes - does that make sense?  Does anyone know hoe easy that is to do?

Its quite heavy looking at the bottom not sure if there's a hoop in there??

to the original poster- i think you can definitely take in the dress a little bit. but i wouldn't take it in a lot- the train might look funny if there's a visible gap between your dress and the train.
pretty dress though!
