Be honest - strapless dresses

I am not a big fan of strapless dresses, but I think that's mostly because I'm so afraid I would spend the entire day pulling the dress up. The truth is I love a lot of strapless styles, but I'm afraid they would be annoying to wear.

I know a lot of brides go strapless, so be honest. If you wore one, were you tugging at it all the time? Does the size of your bust or any other factor make someone a good or bad candidate for a strapless dress?

Thanks!

  • I wore one as a BM and because it was a lace-up back, it seemed to be ok.  I am not crazy about them either. And I have a 36B

  • If your dress fits correctly it will stay up unless you are extremely top heavy. there are ways to compensate, sew on spagetti straps, attach the dress to your bra, double sided tape, etc. but really the most important thing is fit. Most wedding gowns have an internal structure with boning or something, which means that it is supported from the waist and cant slip very far since it would stand up with no one in it, the important thing then is to make sure it fits in the bust so there is no gap for tall people to see down. try on whatever dress you like, if you love it and it looks good on you, you can make it work with alterations.

I am a 42DD and am having strapless dress.  I got the lace-up back and it is great!!
  • I never once worried about having to pull up my dress.  If your strapless dress is fitted properly you won't have to worry about tugging at it all night.

  • I would not... simply because I would be pulling on it.... it's whatever you are most comfortable in and what you think you look most beautiful in. Even more than being comfortable, I am planning on dancing the night away and a strapless dress..... not for me on a jumpy dance floor ;). GOOD LUCK!
  • My strapless gown has a corset back, and the times I've tried it on I haven't had to pull at it at all.  But when I wore a strapless BM dress, I was yanking at it all night.

  • A properly fitted wedding down won't slip on you. Both of my sisters had strapless gowns (one is 34 D, the other 38 DD) and neither had a problem with their dress. My dress is strapless (36 D) and when I got the dress I had zero problems with it falling. I've lost weight since then, and now it falls, but when it's altered it will fit me perfectly again.

Ditto the PP's. A  strapless wedding dress that has been altered correctly will not slip at all.

ETA: I'm a 34D and I'm not worried at all.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies! I feel a bit better about the whole idea now - I'll have to try some on soon.

  • My wedding dress is strapless and my seamstress and me test out moving in my dress. It's a corset back and I had cups sewn in and I dont have any worries of slipping out of my dress or having to tug it up all night

  • My seamstress is tacking my bustier to my dress, so that will hold it up. Plus if it's tight enough in the waist, that gives support.
  • I wore a strapless gown to a formal once and had no problems - danced all night!
  • My dress is strapless but I am a little concerned about it. Of course I'm a 28FF so right now it's got a bit of a gap where my large chest pushes it out. But my seamstress has it and assured me that it will fit like a glove and will not be a problem at all, even at my crazy size
(and yes, that is a real size...I wish it wasn't)

  • I agree with others, I was never a fan of strapless, but when I went dress shopping, the person at the salon picked one and we didn't think I would like. But when I tried it on, it was the one. It has a lace up back, which lets you make it as tight as you need it to be so it seems to stay up pretty well. Plus with the lace up, if you lose or gain a little weight, its ok cause it laces up and it adjustable that way.

  • My biggest issue with strapless is that not all arms look good in them.  Everything else can be worked around, but unattractive upper arms are right there in plain sight.  I hate my arms, I don't want to feel uncomfortable, and I don't want to subject our guests to my ugly upper arms - so I'm having short, fluttery, off the shoulder sleeves added to my strapless corset top gown.  It'll look great, I'll be comfortable, and the ugly arms are covered up.  I'm sure my rather plentiful boobs will still be quite visible, however.
