Who does new mounts for e-rings?

FI and I have been engaged for 3 years, and saving for the wedding has been VERY slow.  We're at the point now where we have a date and are able to pay for everything.  However, there's a problem with my e-ring.

When FI bought it, it fit.  Since then, I have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and my hands are often very swollen.  I haven't been able to wear my e-ring in almost a year.  My "new" fingers are 2 sizes larger than my e-ring and that's too far to stretch or add gold.  I have to get a whole new band.  FI got the ring at Kay Jewelers and they want to charge an astronomical amount for me to give them the old band (which they could reuse) and give me a new band in the right size.

Does anyone know of any other places that will remount an e-ring and not charge an arm and a leg?

You're in Chicago? Go down to Jewlers Row, they should be able to help you out there, or at least be able to help you figure out what is reasonable. My fiance got my ring from a place called Donna Jewelry that aparently is the first stall in the row and he had a great experiance. My ring, bought there, was significantly less expensive than a ring of equal quality bought at a chain store (FI made comparison sheets). It's at least worth the trip down there to see what they say.

Have you talked to your rheumatologist? I talked to mine and we ordered my bands about 3/4-1 size bigger than my ring finger size. It allows for the swelling. I currently wear a ring that is that size already and he told me this would be plenty big to allow for the swelling. They also make rings that open with a hinge for arthritis, and sizing rings inside the rings that pop out too. You may want to try looking online for a new setting and get a local jewler to set it. For me we found the trick of extra size works well, but my condition is a hybrid of yours and another so my swelling maybe different. You may want to look into the hinged rings. I sent you a PM too incase you want some extra info.

  • Thanks for the info!  We're definitely ordering larger for the band, but the e-ring was already bought before I started having the swelling problems.  I was able to wear it for a while and now it just sits in its box.  :-(

I did not even think of Jeweler's Row - thanks for reminding me.  I went to the place he bought the ring, just because I figured they'd be happy to do an exchange for just a few bucks to cover the larger size.  Nope.  Greedy jerks.

  • CMGr is correct- a mall jewelry store does not have as experienced of jewelers- if they even have an in house jewelry AND they're just out to sell you things.

A little hole in the wall jewelery repair store can perform magic.

Ask for "speed bumps" or "sizing beads" as well- that way the ring won't spin on your finger once you get it past your knuckle.
