Alterations timeline

I just got a call that my dress is in (yay!), but I'm not getting married until October and in the meantime I'm working on losing weight and toning.  The shop said that if I came in to try it on, they could see what alterations are needed--should I wait on going in until late July/August-ish so that I have more time to see the results of my hard work?  Or should I be going in now?

Re: Alterations timeline

  • You shouldn't need to start alterations until 6 weeks out. I think trying your dress on now would be a waste if you're actively loosing weight/toning. Your body shape is going to change and change what alteratoins you'll untimately need. I would hold off until at least the end of August (assuming your wedding is mid-late October.

  • I would hold off on determining what alterations are needed, but is it possible for you to go try it on to make sure the color and length and everything else are correct and that it isn't damaged?

  • don't even think about getting alterations until 3 months before the wedding.
  • I am getting married October 9th.  I called my tailor, who is apparently the only guy in town to go to for wedding dresses.  He said I will come in for my first fitting at the beginning of August and probably 2 or 3 more times after that.
  • I guess I'll schedule to go in to make sure that it's the same dress, but tell them I don't want to plan the alterations until August.  Thanks for all the replies!
  • Even if the dress is too big or too small I suggest u see someone and preferably not an alterations place at a cleaner or any Place that says alterations.  I would defintely get a seamstress that does only Bridal wear.  Go for a consultation at least 2 months before your date.
