How far in advance is the right time to get your dress?

I would start looking at 1 yr away.  I started looking at just over a year and just found my dress 5 months to the day before my wedding this June.  Some people find a dress easily, while others take awhile.

I started looking 11 months ahead of time, and found my dress the 3rd time I went shopping.  But I am glad I went when I did because it's going to take 6 months for my dress to come in.

It's never too early to start looking, but I wouldn't actually purchase it until 10-11 months before the wedding if you've found something.  If nothing else, you don't want to buy a dress until you've booked your venues, because you may end up with a very different wedding than your original vision, and you don't want to be stuck with a dress that doesn't fit that.
