Wedding Veil Dry Cleaning. I need your opinion!

Ok. So I have a beautiful veil that was my moms, and both of my aunts. I'm pretty sure this veil is almost 30 years old. It's a bit 'dingy' looking, and by dingy I mean slightly yellowed with age.

I took it too my bridal shop to have it altered. When i asked about dry cleaning it, they said that the yellow color would never come out because of the age.

Really?

So I'm looking for a second opinion, because that just doesn't sound right to me. Surely there has got to be a way of getting this slighty dingy veil white again. Any ideas??

Thanks!

  • I am in the same situation.I found (after a lot of research!) a place in Boston to clean my mother's 30 year old mantilla veil.  I want it dark  ivory but not aged yellow.  The veil expert there said he'd wash or soak it for awhile to get the yellow to go away but that by doing so, the tulle would get "worked down"making it more susceptible to tears, etc.  When I picked it up, it was still more yellow than I wanted, but it was less yellow than when I took it into get cleaned.  I may take it back for one more wash, too.  I did notice immediately that the tulle is not as strong as when I took it in the first time--it's much more fragile but also softer, which is nice.  Fortunatley, I want a dark ivory veil, but if I wanted it white, I think it would have been impossible.  Try on your local boards asking for places where ladies get their veils cleaned.
    Good luck, and keep us posted if you find someone who says they can get the yellow out!
  • I'm a drycleaner...

    I actually whitened a veil today for a bride who wanted to wear her mom's veil :)

    Here are a few suggestions::

    Look for a drycleaner who is a member of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists; they will be able to whiten your veil.

    Or... DIY by soaking your veil in warm water and Oxyclean.  This will require some "babysitting" on your part, but after an hour or so, the veil should loose it's "dinginess".
