Sterling Silver or White Gold?

Calling all ladies with sensitive ears! I know growing up I couldn't wear a lot or earrings that my friends could because it made them sore/infected and my ears were pierced with but as an adult the only earrings I wear are diamond studs in white gold.

I want to wear pearls for the wedding but am having some sticker shock. Does sterling silver irritate anyone's ears? I don't really want to spend the money to experiment but I don't want to pay for gold if I can get silver!

I wear silver on my neck and wrist so its not like I am allergic its just my ears.

  • That's something no one else can answer for you. Everyone's skin reacts differently to different metals. There are people who can't wear any metal at all, including pure gold. There are people who can't wear gold but can wear the cheap stuff. Granted, a nickel allergy (the reason cheap stuff irritates many people's skin) is a lot more common than those reactions, but they do happen to some.

Can you borrow some sterling silver earrings from a friend or your mom or someone just to try for a day or two?

  • I have similar allergies to you can I can't wear silver earrings for more than a couple hours. Do you think you'll wear the pearls again after the wedding? If yes, then I would splurge and get earrings you can wear all the time. Pearls are classic so I'm sure you would get use out of them. If no, well then just get $5 fake pearl earrings for the wedding and paint the posts with clear nail polish.

  • Thanks for the advice. I am going to try and find some sterling silver earrings to borrow and if they give me grief I will splurge on the white gold. I have always wanted a pair and the wedding is the perfect reason to get them!

I'm not sure what your budget is but if you want pearls check out roxy jewelry. Just google roxy wedding jewelry and their site comes up. I just got my pearl necklace from there and it was only 64 and I love it. Idk really know much about pearls but it looks real to me
  • I had the same thing when I was young. I could/can only wear white gold, sterling silver, or 24 carat gold. So, sterling silver was and is not an issue for me where other alloys bugged me.
  • Amazon and most department stores will have gold plated jewelry which shouldn't cause a problem for the day but will eventually wear off. I've also found I can wear anything marked nickel free. Though, if you have the budget, springing for the gold will be nice and last much longer.

I have the same problem. I only wear studs (pearl studs bc the post is gold and diamond white gold studs). I cannot wear cheap jewlery that you would find in places like forever21, charlotte russe. But my jewlery for the wedding is a sterling silver set from Macy's and they do not bother me AT ALL! So if you are going to get sterling silver it can still cost you money, not as much as white gold though! So if you are going to go with sterling silver, go through a place like Macy's bc the quality is better.
