One Shoulder Dress!

I want some opinions.. I am going to be adding a strap to my wedding dress and i know that people have done this before but my mother seems to think that its impossible!  I am going to upload what my dress looks like and then what i want done to it!

and I want the strap added to look like this.

Re: One Shoulder Dress!

  • I think as long as the seamstress follows the line from the seams under the bust and continues to the back it would work out fine. I think going lower down the front like your sample might compete with the shape of the bodice otherwise.

I agree with this.  I also think that the strap should meet in the center of the back where the ruffles start.  It may look a bit odd if the strap hits off to the right or left of the ruffles.

Edit:  Scratch my suggestion...for some reason I thought the ruffles on the back started at the top of the dress and not in the center/lower portion of the back.  Where ever the strap falls in the back should look just fine.

  • I think you could do that. I just did something similar with the prom dress I made my daughter. We used double thick cotton bias tape, and I hand sewed sequin appliques onto it and the dress so it trailed like the look you have. It was really easy. The "strap" has snaps at each end so it's detachable.  Not sure if the wedding dress shop can do this, unless you buy some appliques for them to use. We got ours at a local fabric store that sells sequined fabric by the yard and I hand cut them.

    Their website is here:
    ( I linked to bridal appliques): http://www.habermanfabrics.com/bridal-bride-white-gown-diamond-dress-lace-ivory-beaded-fabric-wedding-veil-satin/beaded-embroidered-trim

Here's their beading by the yard: http://www.habermanfabrics.com/fashion-fabrics/evening-fabric-special-occasion-prom-party/beaded-embroidered-trim-evening-fabric

I'm sure there are similar stores near you.

  • THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! that is going to help a lot! I have been looking at just taking some fabric off the bottom (train of the dress) to make a strap.  That way it would be the same material. BUT i would love for it to be beaded like it is around the top of the dress.  I am actually taking my dress to alterations today so i am hoping everything works out! is it crazy to go to a craft store to look for beads exactly like on my dress? I wonder if someone would even be willing to sew beads on a strap? OR do you guys think it would look fine without beads and just the same fabric as the dress itself.

there seem to be a lot of beads on there.  I cant tell it would be easier to just have the fabric BUT would like look right?
  • Chances are you are are not going to be able to match that beading exactly. I'd say try to find a beading/sequined trim you like that is similar. There are tons of places online, or if you feel better doing it in person, check around any fabric stores near you that sell beaded trim.

The fabric underneath the trim doesn't need to show at all. However, I did ask my salon to give me the part that they cut off anyway, and never used it for mine.

Find a seamstress near you who can help with the sewing part. It really is not that hard. You won't want it to be a permanent attachment, we used snap closures on the strap and inside of the dress to attach it. If you want the trim to continue onto the bodice and down onto the skirt, then that part will need to be attached permanently to the dress.

FYI: I found vendors and items to buy for my wedding simply by googling. You can find what you need.

    Good luck.
