To Bustle or Not to Bustle (Sweep Train)

My gown has a sweep train, and I'm not sure whether I need a bustle or not. I won't trip on it when I dance (practiced a few times), and it's so short that I'm not worried about many people stepping on it.

However, it does trail along the floor a bit, so maybe a bustle's worth it?! Maybe I can even do a simple one myself? Suggestions? Thanks!

  • I would do it--it may seem like it won't be stepped on, but once the dance floor gets crowded, it will. Bustling will also keep your train from getting caught in doors, getting caught under your chair when you move around, and so on.

I would not try to DIY unless you've done something like this before, as it can go horribly wrong. But it should be easy and cheap for a seamstress to put in a one or three point bustle. And I love that it basically gives your skirt a whole new look for the reception.
  • I had a very small train, and I wasn't sure I would need to bustle my dress, but I definitely did.  In fact, my bustle came undone at cocktail hour and it got stepped on at least ten times while I tried to walk across the room to get it fixed!

As PPs said, the cocktail hour and dance floor get very crowded so it gets in the way more than you would expect.  A one-point bustle will take care of that and should be pretty inexpensive.

  • if you have the hook/loops sewn in you will have the option to bustle it if you choose to.  you could always decide not to bustle it that night, even if the loops are sewn in.  I say go for it.  This way you'll have both options.
  • Thanks! I decided to get it done, and I'll be picking it up four days before the wedding. :-)
