Plus Size Bride

Hi all!

I'm getting married in July 2011 and I am a plus size bride - 22W - but I was wondering if any one out there knew:

1.   of designers, stores, etc. that offer plus size samples to try on (besides David's Bridal)
2.  best plus size designers
3.  regular size designers that do a good job with plus sizes too

Thanks!!!

Re: Plus Size Bride

  • Not sure if you check it out much but you should totally come over and join us on the July 2011 board. Lots of great girls over there!

Anyway - on to your guest. I went shopping at a local bridal salon and they had sample sizes ranging from  8 to 26 in their shop. It was a place here in Missouri so I know that doesn't help but I was going to suggest that you just call around and ask some of the salon what sizes they care. The salon I was at carried most Alfed Angelo dress.

    GL dress hunting!!
  • Check on your local board, Knotties there may be able to recommend places.

When I went shopping, several of the independent, local salons had a WIDE range of sizes, 6-26.  But, it certainly wouldn't hurt to call salons in your area before making any appointments to make sure they'll have options for you.  I think the designers they had were Maggie Sottero, Alfred Angelo, DaVinci, and Venus Bridal.

    Good luck.

  • We called all the stores in our area and asked, not just if they had them, but how many different styles in her range.  We found 3 stores in the Richmond area that had multiples in 20 and up.

My daughter bought a Venus and then had it customized during the fitting process.
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!
  • I don't know the correct answer because I've only been to David's Bridal.
I just want to stomp my feet on this subject for a second.

I'm a size 16, just over the cusp into plus sizes.  DB had very few dresses here.  No pretty ones; all plain, all 100% satiny-none with lace, sequins, rinestones, embroidery, etc. (Stomps feet)

    Ok, I'm done.  Good luck!

We went to a consignment store.  We were able to try on the actual dresses we would be wearing, not just samples in some other random size.  We were able to walk out with the dresses the same day.  And of course, we saved money.

  • I <3 consignment stores.  Like double <3
We have some really nice consignment stores here that are picky about what they put out, and half my closet is from them.
I plan on starting there, my DB experiece was just glancing through racks when shopping with a friend.

  • I have seen this site advertized in some big name wedding magazines. They say you can order a dress tehn return it if you don't like it. I don't know all teh details but it might be worth looking into.

  • I am a 22 and left Davids Bridal completely discouraged. The dresses they carry in plus size just loked cheap and didnt fit a plus size body very well. You may want to check out the brand Bonny. These fit really well and looked worth the price. I ended up buying a custom made dress instead but I really like the Bonny dresses.

  • I'm sad to hear that some ladies have had frustrating experiences at David's Bridal. I went shopping there when I first got engaged back in March and found several dresses that fit well (I'm a size 20). The one I liked best was lace with lots of beading and it's very, very pretty and looks more expensive than it was.

Another place I considered but was nervous about is Romantic Gowns by Bridal Online Store: http://www.romanticgowns.com. I did a pretty exhaustive search on the Internet to look for customer complaints, but couldn't find any. Might be worth looking there, too.
