I tried on wedding gowns for the first time this past weekend and my consultant said that when I ordered my gown I would have to have them "open the cups."
Has anyone had to have this done on their gown? If so, how much extra did you have to pay?

I had kind of the opposite problem. I'm plus-sized and while my dress fit perfectly almost everywhere it was 3 inches (!!) too big in the chest and my seamstress had to take it in and considering the mass amount of beading on the bust it was a big job for her. That alteration cost me about $100. The hem and bustle were much cheaper.

Usually opening up the cups is done by the manufacturer and the dress would cost more in general. I would suggest you talk to the store since the quote would have to come from the designer and not a seamstress.

I bought my dress to fit my bust.  It was cheaper to take in the rest of the dress, and have it fit my chest.

I was going to do that, but the sample was the size that I'd have to order and there wasn't enough space for my boobs.  I have a smaller frame, and with my ridiculous boobs the dress was still too big on the sides of my chest.

Talk to the store and have them call the designer and find out the cost on opening up the cup.

I'm confused. If you order the dress to fit your breasts by measurement not by dress size, there is no reason why it wouldn't work. You say that the sample was the right size but it didn't fit your chest. Therefore, it isn't the right size, you need a bigger dress.

 As PP said, it makes sense to buy to fit the biggest feature, whatever that is, and have the dress taken in everywhere else. It's a cheaper (and easier) alteration.

I'm a 36D and I always buy to fit that. In a wedding dress that might mean buying a size 12 or 14, but I wear an 8 in real life.

Exactly this!   I was a 16 in my hips & waist, but my bust was a size 20.  I ordered the 20.  I had the waist and hips altered.  I had to have 5+ inches taken in at the waist. You should order the dress to fit your largest measurement.

I really depends in how much bigger you need it to go. I'm an f cup and have a size 12 sample dress, the seamstress says it won't be a problem to let the dress out to fit, but my wedding is in 9 months and I'm hoping to lose weight making it unnecessary. However, if you are ordering the dress to your measurements order based in your largest measurement. Eta: my dress fits perfectly everywhere else ATM. :

I tried on a sample size 14. Per the manufacturer, the bust measurement of a size 14 dress is 41.5 inches; my bust measurement is 41 inches.
Even with the dress zipped up (and me bra less) the sides of the dress in the bust area were too big and tmy breasts were not where they should be *per* the cups on the dress. The cups were too small.  I'm a 34G and my bust is my largest measurement, no matter how much weight I lose I will always have my breasts.

You should probably order the 16, and have the rest of the dress taken in.  The sample size was surely very stretched out.   I am a 38H and I had the same problem.  Buy the dress that fits your breasts, or you are going to have points in the wrong spots.

you may want to call other bridal salons and ask them if they have a sample in a larger size so you can get an idea of how it will fit.

Ah, I follow. Maybe you might want to ask about removing them altogether, and relying on a shaper to keep the girls in line?

I know, but you might not have a lot of options. Cut costs elsewhere and get a dress that truly fits. Pictures will last forever. No one will remember if you didn't do OOT bags or favours a year after the wedding.

At least if I order up, I won't have to pay extra for the designer to open the cups. The rest of the dress fit me like a glove though...shame about these breasts haha I still have a lot of time to go dress shopping, but I will be interested in trying on a larger sample. Thanks for your replies!

this is the best picture I could find of my boob area !    So, in order to get the "point"/center of the boob in the right spot, I ordered the size 20.  I still had to have the dress taken in around my bust area under my arms, and like, I said, 5+ inches in the waist.  But, that was really the only way to get the chest to fit correctly. 

Keep shopping.  Try on larger samples, you'll see the difference.  You will likely spend a LOT more in alterations by trying to make the bust bigger or "opened up", then you will taking in the rest of the dress.

I can't tell you the nimber of times I had to work on dresses when the bride should have ordered up a size. It's MUCH easier to take a dress in to fit than to let it out. Taking it in will be cheaper and much easier to get the right fit.

PP's idea of trying a larger sample is a great idea. You can see how the dress is meant to lie, without your cups running over! lol

You've got the right mindset - it's about making it fit properly. And I can't stress enough that wedding sizes are ancient methods of torture - measurements are the only way to go!
