South of France wedding in July + heavy satin = bad new bears?

So, a few months ago, my head filled with the romantic notions of a newly engaged girl, I ran to the store and bought this lovely dress in Boston:

Unfortuantely, I am now reconsidering my rash purchase - as I'm living in the south of France for the summer, realizing the temp will likely hover around 90F during the wedding, and have just been informed by my darling fiance that the reception spot will have no A/C. I guess that's how things roll when you get married in a village of 150 people. Anyhow.

Should I get a different dress??? Will I be dying of heat stroke? What materials are light?

Re: South of France wedding in July + heavy satin = bad new bears?

  • i'm having an august wedding so i know it'll be really hot too. if you love the dress and already bought it i think you should keep it. unless you decide to get a tea length dress i think any other long dress you get you'll feel the same amount of heat in. it doesn't have any gathering or pickups in the skirt so at least you won't be carrying around a lot of extra material. does it feel really heavy on? i actually feel sorry for the all guys that will be wearing suits and ties! i haven't bought my dress yet but i'm thinking organza which is pretty light though i know either way i'll still be hot. are you able to at least get some fans in your venue?
  • The gown is beautiful but 90+ degrees and no A/C would make me reconsider.

    sorry
  • First of all, love your dress. Casablanca was one of my favorite designers.

I definitely understand your concerns about the heat; I'm having the same fears about my own July wedding in the South. I agree with PP that pretty much any dress will be as hot unless it's tea-length, but chiffon is a much more airy fabric that may be less stifling. Or a more slim silhoutte, like a sheath, would have less fabric weighing you down.

If you decide to go with the dress, maybe you can eliminate some of the crinoline underneath the dress to make it less heavy, or just rent some big fans for the reception space?

Even though it seems hard to wear something like that in the heat, people did survive (and wear long dresses) for many years before A/C was invented. That's what I keep telling myself, anyway. ;) Good luck.

  • I think you're going to look beautiful, but be very, very warm.

You might want to look into getting a lighter dress.
