Will it FIT???

II have spent the past coulpe of months loosing weight to look perfect in "the dress." I bought my dress last week and absolutely LOVE it. However, I am in a weight loss competition still have a weight loss goal of an additional 25 pounds. I am worried...how far can the alterations be taken?

Re: Will it FIT???

  • it's much easier to take it in than let it out. I'm sure they can bring it in at least two sizes, if not more. It all depends on the style of dress and detailing.

  • My dress maker told me that anything more than 9lbs will always require alterations.  It all depends on the dress and from what I understand, the closure.  But Chelsea is right, it's better to take in, the let out!
  • Be advised that while PPs are 100% correct, dresses can be taken in, they can't be taken in too much and still maintain the original proportions and 'look' of the gown.  So for example, a size 12 dress could be taken in to an 8 and still look fine, but to take it in to fit a size 4 or 2 will probably leave you with a less-than-desirable end result.  It simply won't look right.  If you are serious about losing weight and making measurable progress, it might be better to order your dress a size smaller.  Did you discuss this with the store where you ordered your gown?  It might not be too late to change your order if you only bought the dress a few days ago.
  • I'd have to agree with jennielove. While the dress can be taken in, at a certain point it will lose its shape and proportion. I've read that two sizes is the limit for alterations and roughly 5 pounds per dress size.  And I'm sure you'll look perfect for your wedding day, with or without that kind of weigh loss!
  • How far out is your wedding and how long will your dress take to come in?  If you have time, it would be better to wait until you're closer to your wedding (and have a better idea of how your weight loss is progressing) before you order your dress.  I would really recommend against planning to have a dress altered more than 1-2 sizes.  Losing 25 pounds would undoubtedly be a bigger change than that and the integrity of the dress might be jeopardized.

Also, I'm sure your FI will think you look perfect in your dress, no matter what your size.  It won't be worth losing all that weight if you're miserable every day until your wedding, then put it back on right after.  Just eat and exercise to be healthy and you'll be a glowing bride.  Just a thought. :)

Definitely talk to the place you bought your dress, like today, and see what they can do for you.  GL!
  • I was kind of worried about the same thing. My DB consultant suggested that I order my dress bigger than my normal size because my normal size in the store was waaay too small. She said Oleg dresses run small. I ordered the size she suggested and when I got it, it was extremely big on me. I really hope they're able to do something about this. I believe I was about 140lbs then, I am about 127 or so now. I was going to wait until March to go to my first fitting (due to a desire to lose a couple more pounds), but after reading the above comments I may keep my 2/4/10 appointment just incase I have to make a major adjustment or decision. I hope your dress works out fine!
  • Be careful about loosing a lot of weight.  I bought my gown which cost $825 and the alterations are costing me $625.  I've lost about 15 lbs since I ordered my dress but I've lost 2 dress sizes.  Since I have a detailed dress (beading and lace) it is a lot of work to take it it.  It also has to be taken in no just on the sides but under the bust as well.  Good luck though...to me it's worth $600 to loose weight and look fabulous for my wedding :)
  • Some places have a maximum alteration price, mine is set at $375 so they will not charge me more no matter what needs to be done to the dress to make it fit just right. Like everyone else said easier to take it than to let out.

  • This happened to me, They made me order my dress 3 sizes to big even though I told them I would lose weight.  They said they hear it from every bride, and material can not be added but it can be taken out.  They were right.  The dress looked absolutly amazing!  There was beading on the entire top of the gown so they had a lot of work ahead of them but I told them that they promised it it would look right.  They were shocked when I came inwhen they called me to tell me the dress was ready--and I was down 20 pounds.  They did make it look perfect, it just took a few fittings and I had to stand very still!!
  • My niece's friend bought her dress in a size 18 (she fell in love with it and that size was on sale or something) when she was really a size 8!  She had it tailored down to her size and it looked amazing.  It did not have a lot of detail work though so that is def. something to take into consideration.
