Bridesmaid dresses

Advice appreciated! I love a dress by Joanna August for my bridesmaids Lacey Short, to be specific and it's within everyone's stated budget. Four of my five bridesmaids prefer this dress too. My fifth bridesmaid, who is unable to try on this dress as she lives in Germany, does not like the back of this dress. Thinking it would be a better deal for everyone, I asked my maids if they'd rather choose their own dress, any style, in chiffon from J.Crew. The longdistance bridesmaid said she would prefer J.Crew and the other four prefer the original Joanna August dress. I'm a little disappointed, since the longdistance one asked me if she could my bridesmaid and, per Knot poster's advice, I heartily accepted. Now, I feel stuck. I'd like to keep my girls in the same dress. What would you recommend I do, besides grow a pair?

Re: Bridesmaid dresses

  • I think that majority wins.  Does she not like the back for astetic reasons or for comfort reasons?  Like is too low to wear a bra or something?
  • The Lacey Short would not go well with any bra I own.

The dresses don't have to match exactly. If JCrew has a similar shade to what you're considering, let the bridesmaids choose what they'd like.

Aesthetic reasons. When the girls tried on dresses this past weekend, a few wore strapless bras and they worked quite well. Here's a link to the dress, too: http://www.joannaaugust.com/ceremony/laceyshort

That's why I asked.  If it's something like that, then I can understand her concern.  If it's simply "I don't like this little detail", then I'd say majority wins.

Some people are just not comfortable with strapless bra's.

I personally would wear it with those clear straps or something over it. Matching dresses weren't a big deal to me though so maybe something like this would work for her.

Also, are you sure the issue is with the style and not her budget? To *ME* this dress is very expensive. I wouldn't pay over $200 for such a simple dress.
  • That's a good suggestion. I'll see if she likes that dress. I asked each of my girls individually what their budget is and this dress is within everyone's budget. The dress at J.Crew that the longdistance bridesmaid prefers costs a little more.

This!!  There is no way on the planet I would want to pay $245 for that dress.
  • Welp, the bridesmaids pulled the dress. I did not. Thanks ladies.
  • Alterations and accessories can make all the difference. Talk to her about adding straps, letting her wear a bolero, etc.

  • whew that is an expensive dress!

Since she is in another country, i would just let her buy a dress that is similar to what the other girls are wearing.
