Dress Came in too short?!

So when I tried on my dress and ordered it I was wearing a size 12, I was measured and ordered a size 4 (I wear a 0-2 normally). Okay. So the dress I tried on was huge, even in length so the girl said, "we're going to order it petite" - to which I said "I'm not normally petite and I want to wear heals. Also since this dress is large on me won't it naturally be somewhat shorter in a smaller size" - she said then said I should still buy whatever shoes I wanted and as tall as I could get because it would probably still be long - So we order it a size 4 petite - costing me an extra $50 for the petite size. It comes in and I go to try it on - not wearing ANY shoes the dress BARELY brushes the ground. I am furious. I already ordered my shoes and they just came in - they have 5 inch heals and I love them just as much as my dress. I scheduled another try on for next week with the shoes. I am nervous and furious all at the same time. What if the shoes now make the dress too short?! Shouldn't the salon take some action to reimburse me or fix the issue if they ordered it wrong and gave me misinformation? My mom and two sisters where with me when the salon told me to order petite - they witnessed me questioning why petite and what about shoes. I just want to go in to this next try on prepared with how to react - I expect the worst and I don't feel it is my fault that the salon ordered the dress too short and misinformed me.

Re: Dress Came in too short?!

  • If the dress is already too short without you wearing any shoes then your 5 inch heels will definitely make your dress even shorter.

I do think that the fault lies with the salon.  They gave you the wrong information when it came to ordering your dress and I think they should either reimburse you or order you another dress.

For your next fitting I would take your mom and your sisters (or as many that can make it) so that they will be there to back you up when you speak with the salon.  I would tell them exactly what you were told by your salesperson and that since she is suppose to be the expert you listened to her opinion.

I am sorry that this is happening.  In the chance that the salon will not do anything, what style is your dress?  Is it a ballgown with a good amount of tulle/crinoline under it?  If so, they may be able to take out a few layers to lengthen the top fabric a bit, but I don't think it would be lengthened enough to accomodate your shoes.  To be on the safe side I would look for other shoes just to be safe.

  •  It has a lace trim and the bottom, mermaid style. She had said to order it petite because it would be VERY expensive to alter the hemline if at all.

  • Definitely raise hell with the salon.  I mean, do it respectfully and politely, but let them know in no uncertain terms that this was their error and they need to fix it.

They should re-order you a rush order dress in the proper size if they have to.
  • Well if I were you I would have rather shelled out some money to take up the hem to right length then to have a dress that is way too short.

I am sorry that this happened.  I would definitely putting up a fight with the store.  They need to fix this because they were the one who made the call to order it in petite.  It would be different if they were telling you to order it in a regular size and you insisted to order it in a petite.

You do have plenty of time to get this issue resolved.  I would want reimbursement for the $50 they charged you for ordering it in a petite, and I would also request that they order you a new dress.

Finally, when your dress comes in I would suggest finding a private alterations person...they are typically less expensive and most likely do better work then those at the bridal salons.  I would call around and see how much they would charge to hem a wedding dress that has lace trim around the bottom...this will give you an idea of what you are looking at.

Best case scenario is if they do order you a new dress, since your heels are so high, you may not need any alterations to the hem at all.

[QUOTE]I'm sorry this happened. I would raise hell with the salon until they fix it by ordering you a new dress that is the appropriate length.  It sounds like they should have done a custom length order on your gown b/c of the hem.  Many designers offer Hollow to Hem measurements/ordering.

<div>This. My dress had a dress overlay and would have been nearly impossible to hem, so we ordered it in a custom length. It cost extra and took a lot longer to come in, but it fit perfectly.</div>

  • RAISE HELL!  You took your consultants advice, and she should know better!!!
  • Did she not know the length of the petite dress?! I would think they would have access to that information to make sure they order the right size. Jeez. I would be so mad!

  • I am so glad to read all your responses and know I'm not crazy for feeling how I do. I will let you all know how it goes next week!

  • So with my awesome shoes, the dress was about 2 1/2 inches too short. The petite size shortened it too much. BUT, the seemstress was there and was able to fix it in under 5 minutes and didn't charge me for it because she saw how upset I was. She also did my first fitting since I was there and so was she. So that surprised me. Now I don't have another fitting until August/September. Need to not gain/lose too much between now and then! (no pressure! lol).

PS - she has to take in both side seems and is charging $85 for that, good price??
