Dress logistics

I live in CA but my wedding is in OH. I am trying to figure out if it's better to buy my dress in CA and ship it home for the wedding, or if I should buy it in OH and just fly home for fittings? Of course each bridal store tells me to buy it there. Any advice??

Re: Dress logistics

  • Have you already selected the dress?

If so, I'd personally see if a legit wholesaler (netbride.com, rkbridal.com, pearlsplace.com) has it, then order it from them and have it shipped to your current home. A bonus is that you'll likely pay less than you would in a salon.

Then go to a good local seamstress for alterations ... your local board can recommend a seamstress, or check Yelp.com and other review websites.

  • I think I have found "the one" but I'm not totally sure yet. I will definitely check out the wholesalers you recommended....I've never even thought of doing it that way. Thanks!

  • That's what I'm thinking too; traveling is a hassle enough without having a dress to worry about too, and I think I would be stressed out with shipping it. At first I thought it would be better to have the dress with me, for fittings but in the long run I think it would be better to have the dress where the wedding is. Less worry.

  • I wouldn't be opposed to traveling with it, if it meant not having to fly home for fittings and whatnot, but that's just me. If you don't mind flying back and forth, then go for it.
  • My wedding will be in New York but I'm planning on buying my dress in Florida (where I live). I would much rather be able to just schedule fittings and have all alterations done near where I live and then just travel with the dress for the wedding. For me, I can't justify having to fly home for all of my fittings and alterations (I mean what if it takes more trips for alterations than you expect, you might have to fly home a lot).

  • I live in CO but the wedding is in MA. I bought my dress in CO because flying back for fittings was going to get too expensive. I'm going to pack the dress as my carryon come the wedding and have it steamed when I get to MA before the wedding.
  • I live in CO, but my wedding is in CA. I picked out my dress and started alterations while I was home visiting CA for Christmas. I'll go back 2 weeks early for my wedding, and finish alterations then. I would not want to try to travel with my dress.

That being said, my dress just didn't need that much altering (shortened slightly, added a bustle, added cap sleeves). So it may depend on how many fittings you need.
  • Thanks! It does look like I'm going to have to see how many fittings I might need. If I only need 1 or 2 then I'd probably rather pay to fly back to Ohio than flying with my dress or shipping it. It might be more expensive but it will be a whole lot less stressful!
