My dress is too small, any ideas?

I purchased my dress used from someone on craigslist. I love the dress, it's a Davids Bridal dress that is discontinued. It's a tea lengh ivory dress with a satin layer and a lace like overlay on it.  I gained about 30 lbs a few months ago when I got the depo provera shot and still can't seem to shed a pound of it. the doctor says it will take time, which I don't have!
My wedding is in 32 days, the dress is a 12 and will not zip up the last 4 inches. I bought a spanx slip hoping it would help and it looks better in the belly area but still won't zip. Is it possible to have it taken out any? or should I just look for a new dress asap? I really dont want to spend more money but at this point even trying to lose 10 lbs may be impossible and I'm getting so close to the wedding day that I'm worried.

Any help/ideas would be appreciated!!

  • How about getting the zipper taken off and changed to a corset?

  • Is there anyway a seemstress can add a panel to the back. Maybe like a corset back type. I'm not sure if they would be able to take it out much. But you could at least ask a seemstress and find out what can be done. I'm sure they would have an idea or 2.

  • take it to a seamstress.  Now.
  • I also advise seeing if the seamstress can add a Corset back. I know David's will do this to their own dresses for $150.00.   We can't really say whether the dress can be let out enough to fit.  Most dresses can be let out up to one size.  But, if the dress was altered by the previous owner, you may not have that much room.

I second, get to a seamstress ASAP !   You need to figure out what you have to work with.
  • I really like the corset back idea :)

  • I had a similar issue, but my dress already had a corset back so the seamstress put in a larger back panel and it fit much better--especially over the hips.

Go to a seamstress ASAP they will be able to tell you if they can fix it (loosen it, add a panel, etc.) If they say no you may have to go find another dress off the rack.

    Good luck!
  • Ditto all PPs, get thee to a seamstress!

I think a corset back is a good call, because it will also suck you in in the front. There's no amount of undergarments, short of a really extreme waist cincher, that's going to suck you in enough to make up for 4 inches of zipper not doing up. Also, most dresses now aren't made with enough seam allowance to let it out that much, most regular dresses come with about an inch, wedding dresses, maybe 2.

Also, at 32 days out, it's time to alter the dress to fit you, not yourself to fit the dress. Even with the best intentions, you're talking about losing a dress size, possibly 2, and I don't think that's realistic, and I'm pretty certain it wouldn't be healthy.

  • I know it's been said, but I want to agree with all the PP about getting a corset back.  It WILL work and doesn't take much to do.  My dad wanted my mom to wear her wedding dress for their 25th wedding anniversary (vow renewal) and she was a size 3 then and a size 12 now... I took her zipper out and put in eyelets and corseted the back and it worked perfectly and looked beautiful.  Don't worry... It will all work out! :)
