dress from china - review

Okay so I wanted to share my experience with ordering a dress from china. My wedding is over a year away so I figure I’d give it a try and if it doesn’t work out I can donate it to charity or try to sell it. I went through the site dressilyme. The reviews for the company were hit and miss so I knew it was a risk. I sent them a picture of the dress and they quoted me $180 for it. i originally budgeted $1000 for my dress so i figure if it worked out i would be saving a lot of money.

I just got my dress, it took a month to get here, and though the dress is okay I won’t be wearing it at my wedding. The dress is strapless with organza layers for the skirt. Overall the craftsmanship is decent. There’s a good amount of boning and the design is mostly similar to the photo though the skirt is way too poufy. But the quality of the organza is not that great. It feels stiff not soft and flowy like organza dresses I’ve tried on. As well even though I had my measurements taken by a professional seamstress the bust is too big which is an easy fix, but the waist, hips and thighs are way too tight. It’s a mermaid dress so I can’t sit in it comfortably. So even if I wanted to wear it I don’t know if a seamstress could let it out enough.

So because of the quality of material and fit I don’t feel beautiful in it. It’s an okay dress but okay isn’t good enough for my wedding day. The thing I’ve learned about the experience is that you need to “feel” good in your wedding dress. So if you order a dress online like this there is no way you will know how you feel in it. Even though the dress wasn’t a huge amount of money it is still $180 I could’ve put towards something else.

Overall I would not recommend going through the route of ordering a dress from China. I think the risk is not worth it. I know a lot of ladies will say I told you so. I should’ve listened! : ) so I hope I can deter other ladies from doing this.

  • I just got my dress today I gave them the 2 months to take there time and make it. and just can't explain how dissapointing the quality of this dress!

I'M AM ABSOLUTELY APPALLED! at not only how i received my dress but what the dress looked like.

Now granted I took into consideration that it was a remake, knock off however you want to word it.. but this dress's quality was sub-par and thats giving it credit.

the color was not what i ordered it was white not ivory, the roses were tacked on with maybe 3 loose stitches and some were even falling off. the pleating was either hot glued or seam taped and it was falling off.

It arrived in a giant duct taped ball and there was sticky tape goo on the dress itself due to how they shipped it.

i just can't believe they thought this dress was worthy of sending and charging someone for.

    so very disappointed.
     roses coming off already

zipper pleating glue or seam taped ripping open

     5 y/o cutting fabric.

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT ORDER A DRESS FROM DRESSTIMES.COM if it is anything more then an a-line plain old boring wedding dress!

They destroyed this dress and my dreams for that dress!

Back to the drawing board and now i get to do more shopping... IN STORES NOT ONLINE!
  • I have a very similar review. Months ago I ordered a dress from a seller on dhgate.com. It came in and was very pretty, exactly like the photo, and was well crafted with lots of structure. The only problem was that it was supposed to be made of heavy satin, and instead it was made of a material that looked like satin, but it was a little rough to the touch and very thin.

My mother, sister, and my friends all said I should keep it, it's a beautiful dress, but I just couldn't get past the fabric, so I sold it on kijiji for exactly what I paid for it ($160) to a girl who loved it. I'm not out any money at all and still had plenty of time to order an original Private Label by G gown.

I'm glad I gave it a try, and I would seriously consider getting other dresses (for a night out, or even rehearsal dinner) from these sites, but not my wedding dress..

  • Think about what you can logically get for that price- cheapest material and sweatshop workers who aren't all that skilled and work in horrible conditions. People seem to think that there is some sort of magic where they can get decent materials and workmanship for a small fraction of what the dress would cost over here. While it's true that the bridal industry does a lot of marking up, when you look at what materials cost wholesale and what decent wages are (even in China) and then assume that the seller is earning a good profit, the math just doesn't work out for these cheap dresses. It's better to go with a reputable dealer and not support this kind of industry.

Unfortunately you get what you pay for sometimes.

I found mine on a clearance sale. $1000 is a pretty realistic budget for something nice, but not over the top, IMO.

ALSO - Kudos to those of you who were brave enough to try this. Smile
  • wow thanks for sharing your stories guys. i really hope other ladies that are thinking of doing this change their mind cause of these posts. such a waste of time and money. i almost think that the good reviews i've read about these companies aren't real! ek.
  • i took a chance and well it blew up in my face. I imagine i could of worked with it and fixed all the roses and re sewn all the mess ups but honestly i was so disappointed in the dress i just knew it wasn't ment to be.

Now i just get to go dress shopping again... it may work out to my advantage. With this seasons dress going on clearence and new dresses coming in...
  • My friend had the same problem  How it is explained to me is this.  Many of the designers make in China, but they have supervised factories.  Some even own them.  They have their pattern makers and supervisors in these places and they check every gown.  The copy sites make from photos and not patterns and they do not get the best high end fabrics.  Just my thoughts./
  • I don't think it's just dress from China you have to worry about... just don't buy a dress without trying it on first. O__o

On the plus side, you can always use it for a Trash the Dress shoot.

and they have been avoiding my emails and their phones are never answered. They have not given me a shipping address and have a 7 day return policy today is day 5.  They have informed me that they will only be refunding me 52 dollars out of my 350.00 b/c they are charging me the orginial shipping which was FREE with my order and a restoring fee and i have to pay almost 200 to send it back...

and this is how it showed up AT my MIL house...

rolled up like a sleeping bag in a trash bag a duct taped!!!
  • My friend got her wedding dress from there.  Nothing was wrong with it at all...or at least I couldn't tell as a guest at the wedding.  Hmmm.
