I think deciding on the tux shirt color has got be the most stressful decision by far!
My dress is ivory, but not a super ivory color. I would compare it more to diamond white, maybe a bit more on the ivory side. At the dress store and at Men's Wearhouse I'm told that the men should wear ivory shirts, but they look so yellow at Men's Wearhouse. We want a really classic tux look with black bow ties. I feel like the ivory takes away from that look. I'm also afraid that the guys will look dirty in the ivory shirts. At the same time, if the men were wearing black ties, less shift would be showing. But since they are wearing bow ties, will too much white shirt show?
I'm using a lot of black and white for my wedding, so that's another reason I'm unsure about the ivory shirts. I know my dress is ivory, but I'm not concerned about it.
Does anybody have pictures of an ivory dress with white tux shirt w/bow tie?
Thanks!!
Re: Ivory vs. White tux shirts... ahhhh!!!
[QUOTE]White. Just get white. It doesn't need to match you.

This!
[QUOTE]White! I wish this whole ivory shirt thing would just die.

This is my thought as well. I think the problem stems from the tux rental places trying to pawn off their ugly ivory shirts.
I think this in a sticky at the top of the page, but no one reads them :( it would save a lot questions.

I think so too! I know that when my brother was renting his tux for his wedding, the rental place kept trying to tell him that the white shirt with the ivory dress would look bad. When I was there, the lady almost made me feel like I had no taste when I said I wanted to do white instead. I was all set on white, until she kept questioning me!
Plus, we are going for a whole James Bond type look with the black tux and black bow tie... and I don't think James Bond wears ivory!
Thanks for your input... I just needed some reassurance on the white shirt decision!
Here's a tip (something that I found out from experience) The MW people will try to say that white shirts make the bride's off-white dress look "dirty". Yet -- the color of the backs of their (Men's Wearhouse) ivory vests -- WHITE! I guess that the white backs of the ivory vests make the ivory shirts look "dirty"!
Bottom line - Men's Wearhouse consultants don't know what they are talking about and David's consultants shouldn't be giving out fashion advice for men. Not saying don't buy/rent from them, but you'll want to shop around before making a decision. Once you leave the store with a David's outfit - There's no turning back! They won't know you! They also have a marketing agreement with Men's Wearhouse to send all of the business there. They CAN'T recommend any place but MW!
Best of luck!
He is wearing an ivory vest... so ivory shirt yes or no? Because won't a white shirt look odd against the ivory vest and tie?

No, they are 2 different shades of the same color. What I think would look odd is a ivory shirt with a ivory tie/vest.

Uh oh, really? This is what FI was planning on wearing, for the same reason as many of you mentioned, the folks at Joseph A. Bank told us that the white shirt would look weird and stand out against my champagne colored dress. Also because FI will be wearing an ivory vest. Thankfully they are ordering a sample for him to try on and see the colors together so that we can decide whether to go with that or to go for the white. OP, perhaps your tux vendor will also let you order a sample for your FI to try on so you can see for yourself?
This is an old thread but I don't want to duplicate, so I'll ask my question here. I have a champagne colored dress (pic below) and the MW consultant had me do ivory shirts - I am second guessing it
They have sleek black tuxes (which I liked) and bowties (which I wanted - we're doing an old hollywood/cocktail theme for a night wedding), but the groom will be in a black tux, ivory shirt, and silver vest and bowtie.
My issue is with the silver and ivory and black. It feels off if not dirty/ugly
The guys are in the same but with purple.
Sighs - do you think I should try to switch the order to white shirts???
Update - I have had a complete revelation and am definitely changing to white shirts - UGH what was I thinking, those ivory shirts looked DIRTY!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Now I have a new question, which is what color pocket square do you think I should do? Matching each vest/tie color (silver for groom; purple for groomsmen)? I'm thinking of the boutonnieres - I don't want so much it looks like overload!
Neurosis help appreciated - thank you
Thanks! We are going back this weekend - after a moment of clarity on my part. I will do FI in classic black and white and have the groomsmen wear the matching Lapis vest & bowtie to the bridesmaids.
@cmgr, I think your son-in-law looks nice!
@misslobita, if black works in your party and you like it, go for it! I found a few photos on Pintrest where that look, with a light tie/vest over it, looked really sharp. I think it depends on your overall look and feel.
Those Mens Wearhouse shirts should be banned
The Internet is FULL of horror stories about them LOL.
