Dresses on Etsy

I'm thinking of buying a dress on Etsy because the prices are right and there are styles very similar (some identical) to what I have tried on and loved. Does anyone have advise about this? I'm nervous to buy a dress online from just a picture without trying it on first.

  • Your fears are exactly correct. It is terrifying to buy a dress that you won't know what the fabric, fit, and style will be like until you get it in the mail. Not to mention the length, quality, etc. Normally Etsy is a good bet for all things wedding, but purchasing a dress from there is a very scary thing as I'm assuming most vendors that create dresses are making them custom and very likely have a no return policy. It might be worth a try if you can find a gown on there that you are able to return or exchange.

  • First, you need to understand that Etsy is not a single entity. It is made up of many sellers, similar to Ebay, except that Etsy sellers generally handmake their own product. However, some are Chinese sweatshops in disguise, so make sure you pick one with good English and lots of positive reviews, preferably based in the U.S., though there are good sellers internationally as well. I ordered my lace fingerless gloves from an Etsy artist in Denmark.

  • I agree with arbyallie - check the reviews. I ordered lace for a veil on Etsy and it was just beautiful, and a cake topper that i love. For a dress, with fabric and sizing issues, maybe you can communicate a lot with the seller before you buy? Perhaps they can send you a fabric swatch. I even had one seller who was willing to make my clay cake-topper in a different color becauses I messaged her to ask. So I would say lots of communication is key for Etsy purchases!!

I'm ordering my wedding dress on etsy.  After trying on a million dresses, I know what styles look good on me, but I couldn't find the right dress.

I was recommended to someone on etsy by a bride that already got her dress from her and loved it.  She had excellent reviews and works here in America, not another country.  She took every measurement possible from me, sent me fabric samples, and has communicated with me through out.

Is it still risky?  Yes, but I was willing to risk a little rather than buy a dress I didn't like that much.  Is it for everyone?  NO.  It is taking a chance... but you can at least take a chance in a smart way.

Make sure the seller is from here, read their reviews, and if possible, see if you can talk to a real bride who used this person.  Also, make sure the prices aren't insanely low.  A dress that would normally cost thousands should not be bought for $200, you know?  That's a sign that the person is using either really crappy fabrics and/or sweatshop labor.

Then be SURE of what you want.  Try on dresses first to find out what looks good on you.  Then make sure to give the seller accurate measurements.  And be prepared to take it to an alterations person because it's common that even with all your measurements, it still may not be absolutely perfect.

    Good luck!

ETA:  There may be some good international sellers, just be cautious.
