Opinions on Tungsten Rings?

FI and I recently went to a bridal show and won a gift gard to JVL Jewelry for 2 wedding rings. They only have tungsten rings though. This is ok for FI, but I'm not sure if I want a more traditional ring or not. Any opinions of this company of tungsten rings in general?

Re: Opinions on Tungsten Rings?

  • DH's ring is tungsten...there's something about the metal that will not allow the removal of any scratches. I THINK it also cannot be resized. I can't remember that part for sure though. So just stuff to ask.
FWIW...he really wanted the ring he got..I wanted something to match my beautiful e-ring (which is rose gold) ... so our rings don't match. But we each got exactly what we wanted. =)
  • As PP said, tungsten can't be resized. If you need a new size, you'd have to buy a new ring. I guess it wouldn't really be a big deal unless you are married in a religion that blesses your rings, or if you're just sentimental about keeping your wedding ring and wearing it for years.

I am pretty sure the jewelers said it resists scratching better than gold does (a more durable metal, kind of like stainless steel) & is significantly less expensive. In looking at rings, most of the women's tungsten rings I've seen look like smaller versions of the men's rings, matching. Depending on your E ring, that may not look right. BUT you have the free rings, I would go, look around and check it all out.
  • I will likely be getting a plain titanium (which is very similar) band to wear when I go places I don't want to wear my diamond stuff (like to the barn) and out camping and stuff.  Is that an option for you?  Get a pretty one to match and then get a free spare for dirty work?

  • yes definitely cant be resized-which may be ok for him and you as most girls dont fit in their wedding rings when they are pregnant.  It is more denser then gold and does not scratch or get finger prints.  when you go look at them you can see the gold gets finger prints all over it and the tungsten doesnt.  but check them out and see what you guys like.

  • FI's ring is tungsten and we really like it. Its true that it can't get resized and that it doesn't scratch. A few jewelers we talked to said that it will shatter if hit hard enough.

My friend has a tungsten wedding band that she wears without her e-ring. It looks just like a tiny version of a mans ring. Since you won a gift card I would say get one for the times you don't want to wear your nice ring.
  • I wouldn't want one for me. But each person is different. I like the delicate look of the traditional rings.

Is titanium the one they can't cut off in case of an emergency? Someone told me this and I flipped because FI wants one. Or will that shatter as well?

  • That's right, you cannot cut off tungsten in an emergency.  I was told this by many jewelry shops.  FI wanted to one, and the design isn't bad.  But I convinced him not to get it because you can't resize or cut it off.
  • You can't cut it, but you can shatter it. There's this horrible myth going around that you'll lose your finger if you get hurt, and it's simply not true.

There are videos on youtube of people shattering tungsten rings if you want to see how it's done.

    Titanium can be cut off.
  • *sigh, shakes head* Oh people.
  • Titanium and Tungsten can both be cut off with jeweler knives.  They are much harder to cut off than gold however.  The likelihood of someone loosing their finger because of a titanium or tungsten ring is extremely rare.

Most men don't wear their rings if they work in a labour intensive job, because the risk of getting it cought on something and ripping your finger off is much higher than breaking your finger and needing to remove the finger to get the ring off.  Fl is getting titanium, and I've requested he not wear his ring to work, since he is a painter and is doing stuff with his hands all day long.

Plus they are way less money.  To me, a titanium ring is just more man-proof.

This is true. ^^ Everything can be cut in someway. Watch youtube. My FH has a tungsten ring and he loves it. He works in construction and the knowledge that it won't bend like gold will is nice. We won't have to get a new ring every 5 years. Nice investment. :)

What are the restrictions on the gift card? Read the fine print carefully, and check with the shop, because if you decide that you don't want Tungsten rings you might be able to sell the gift card at a discount to someone else. So, if it's worth $3000 at the jeweler's, someone might pay you a couple thousand for the gift card.
  • Titanium seemed less man-proof than tungsten, as titanium is very easily scratched and tungsten can't be scratched. Titanium is also very very light, which my Fi didn't like, he liked the weight of the tungsten better.
As for a woman's ring, not all women swell when they get pregnant, and if they do, it's generally only for a month or two, I personally wouldn't factor that into my decision.
  • I got the same thing! i went to a bridal expo in North Bergen and I just received a call today about the gift card. I was unsure about the tungsten also but since they're free... I figured there's no harm in getting them. If we decide we prefer different bands, we can always purchase something nicer later on. Then we can use the tungsten rings as back up. For example, when traveling, when working, etc.. in any situation that you don't feel comfortable wearing your real ring, you can wear the tungsten. You're really not losing anything. However, if you feel like you really won't use them, you can probably try to sell the card for cheaper and use the money you get and put it towards your wedding!

Even people I know with rings that could be resized didn't bother and just stopped wearing their rings when it wasn't comfortable.

Also, not all women choose to get pregnant, so it might not be an issue.
  • Unfortunately they're sorta junk, bosco bridal show right?  I was excited too, but if you look up tungsten rings on google they typically run around $25 each, so when you have to pay $50 for shipping & handling it's like you're just buying the rings straight up.

Not all tungsten rings are super cheap.

They will also shatter if dropped from a certain height onto a floor like a ceramic tile floor, so they absolutely can be cut off (but not resized).

Also, H likes his. He only wears it when we go out on the weekends, etc. Not to work/dirt biking or ATVing/cycling.
