Bustle for Bridesmaid dress?

My bridesmaids are wearing this Alfred Angelo 7043 dress:http://www.alfredangelo.com/collections/styles/7043 which as you can see has a train.  a few questions i have:

will this dress need to be hemmed for each bridesmaid?
can we add a simple/inexpensive bustle hook?   Do you think we could add a simple bustle ourselves to save money or does this need to be done professionally?  Does anyone have experience with this?

THANK YOU!

Re: Bustle for Bridesmaid dress?

  • Typically a small sweep train doesn't need a bustle but by the looks of the picture, the train is pretty long.

A simple one point american bustle would be your best bet for that train.  Are your girls using the seamstress at AA for alterations or are they going to their own private seamstress?  Either way I would atleast foot the bill for the bustle addition.

Another option would be to see if there was a wrist loop located on the train, because instead of adding a bustle your girls can just slip the loop around their wrists to keep the train from dragging at the reception.

Finally, do you have to have the train?  If the train isn't something that is necessary you can simply have your girls get their dresses hemmed so that the train is removed.

  • Thank you so much for your suggestions...   each of the girls is going to use their own seamstress for a few reasons.. 1. the AA is not in a convenient area, 2. i decided to order these dresses through the small, local bridal shop where i ordered my gown 3. my bridesmaids are in different cities.  I only have 4 girls, and i do like the train, so i'm hoping to coordinate a way to be sure each dress has a bustle.  i'm actually even thinking now of asking one of my bridesmaids mom's who is great with sewing if she could add the bustles the day of the wedding when we're all getting ready.  There will not be a day where we will all be together, unfortunately.
  • I would avoid doing alterations the day of the wedding - that's just asking for trouble.

A friend of mine used these dresses for her BMs. They didn't bustle the hem and it was fine. The train looks longer in the picture than it actually is.

I know they had them altered to fit properly and hemmed since very few people are as tall as the dresses come in, but I don't believe the train was altered.

  • I would recommend doing a bustle, not leaving it. I wore a dress with a very short train (6 inches maybe) to my high school prom and it was getting stepped on the whole night. So frustrating not to be able to move because someone was standing on my dress!
  • I've bought the same dress for my bridesmaids.  I'm curious to find out what you ended up doing with the trains?

  • I've worn a similar dress as a guest. When I had it hemmed they shortened the train so it was really just a little sweep, not as long as this picture but still definitely a train, if that makes sense. It didn't need to be bustled. Is that an option for you?
