Buttons...Help!

So,  I haven't picked a wedding dress yet, but I have liked several except that I REALLY want buttons instead of a zipper.  Has anyone taken out a zipper and added buttons.  I'm nervous about fake buttons over a zipper, because when I've seen them, they tend to not lay flat against the dress.
Any idea how expensive it would be to add buttons and remove a zipper?  Am I just crazy?
TIA for the help!

Re: Buttons...Help!

  • I tried on a couple dresses with buttons over the zipper.  The buttons were on one side and the loops were on the other, making it lay flat.

  • If you had to button over the zipper, what was the point of the zipper?

    To hide the zipper :-)

<div>I could be wrong, but I think a lot of dresses with buttons also have a zipper because it's easier to put the dress on if it is form fitting.  It's a lot easier to negotiate those little buttons if you aren't also trying to hold up and pull together the dress. </div>
  • I had them added to my dress over the zipper and they lay flat.

  • I am adding buttons to my dress! The buttons are about $20/dozen but I do not know how much it will cost to have the seamstress apply them. I saw it done on another dress and it does not stick out.. they are going over the zipper. I was the same way...really wanted buttons on my dress but the dress I ended up falling in love with didn't have them. I would keep the zipper and just have the buttons with a loop on the other side to make them look like they are really being used and to cover up the zipper!
  • I've sewn for over 35 years. Adding buttons yourself and adding fabric or ribbon loops into the seam of a dress would be a pain. It sounds as though the bridal salon can add that option based on the responses above. I'd make sure yours can.
  • Ok, I'll check with the salon.  I"d be fine with a zipper, as long as the buttons had loops to really close over the zipper.
    Thanks for all the advice!
  • Ah. Ok. I guess that makes sense. The zipper is to close the dress, but the buttons are more for style and aesthetic purposes.

  • Yea.... I just figure it'll be the only time I'll EVER get to wear a dress with buttons like that!

  • My dress had a zipper and then buttons to hide the zipper.  Not only were the buttons decorative they also helped to provide extra support to the dress...the zipper held the dress up but once the buttons were buttoned the dress fit even better.

FYI...If you do have buttons on your dress (or add them) make sure to get yourself a crochet hook to help you to loop the loops around the buttons, if not it is a pain the butt!

  • my dress has fake buttons over the zipper- they look fine to me at least, plus, i'll have a veil over my back, and honestly, the zipper is probably the last thing guests will be looking at- you'll look beautiful :) seems like everybody has good suggestions though
