Bide and bridesmaid wear same dress?

I already got my wedding dress... its a simple Nicole Miller sheath dress. I came across the exact same dress in a beautiful blue color, and I love it. I am only having one bridesmaid - my sister. Would it look werid to have the bridesmaid in the same dress as the bride (mine would be white, hers would be blue). We can also get the blue on in a short version as well...

Re: Bide and bridesmaid wear same dress?

  • I would probably have her get the short version.  If it were me, I would later regret having my bridemaid wearing the same gown as me on my wedding day.
  • I think it would be odd.
  • I wouldn't do it.

  • I'm surprised how many people have thought it would be odd! My SIL is having her bridesmaids wear white dresses... I thought that would be way more out there then the same dress, different color.

    Thanks for the input!
  • Don't you want to stand out on your wedding day? If you must do the short version but save your favorite dress for you.

  • I would go with the short version.  That and the blue would be enough of a difference so that your dress remains special.

  • Don't do it. It would look weird.

  • I wouldn't do it.  Just because it is a different color doesn't mean it really looks a lot different at first look.

I think it would be odd.  Choose a different dress.
  • I agree, I think it'd be odd and you'd later regret it. If you MUST, go with the short version. But I'd really recommend you find her an entirely different dress.

Yes, if they don't have it get it hemmed to a shorter length!
  • You want to stand out on this day. Don't do it. And as for bridesmaids all wearing white... same issue. In group photos, you'll have to look at the length of the dresses just to figure out who the bride is. Bride should stand out.

<div>This. Seriously? I mean.. Can we see the dress? There are 531589012359821 dresses out there and you want the one that will look exactly like yours? I think you'll regret it.. I feel like you won't stand out and as a guest, I would definitely have a question mark above my head while watching you walk down the aisle after we already saw the gown several times on the women that walked down before you. </div>
  • I personally don't see why everyone thinks it's weird.  The whole tradition of bridesmaids started because back in the day, there was a fear of evil spirits so the bmaids would dress identical to the bride to try and trick them.  It's why there's so much insistence on same bmaid dresses in the wedding world still.  And it's a different color, so I really don't see the issue.

I say if you like it, go for it.  If it's a different color, you'll still stand out :)

FWIW, I did find an old picture from someone's wedding 20-some-odd years ago a few years back in which the BM wore exactly the same thing as the bride, right down to big poofy veil.  I thought it was a photo of a double wedding until I asked about it.
  • I wouldn't do it personally but if you want to I'd get her the short version.
