Satin Dress is WAY TOO SHORT! Ideas? Help please!

So... not sure how this happened, but one of the BM dresses that we just got in is way too short for the BM. I swear it was not that short when we tried it on a few months back, but here we are, 79 days away and the dress is scandalously short. LOL Okay, not so funny. The alterations dept at DB said they could not lengthen the dress (which seems odd to me). I've attached the link below, does anyone have any ideas that might help?

I'm considering buying a satin skirt from DB so the fabric matches and adding another layer using that. Not sure if that's possible or if it will look ridiculous...

Any ideas?

  • is you BM awkwardly tall? Did DB order her a shorter dress? I know that when we were looking at dresses for a wedding I was in last year there were a couple options in dress length...the could be ordered a bit shorter or longer.

  • LOL the name of the dress is ''SHORT''.. well, see, can she get a longer dress, same thing..just longer? and why they don't lengthen?? They need a good reason for that..

They have pencil skirts and those peekaboo slips at David's. It might look really weird, but they should at least let your BM try one on under her dress.

Or - it IS strapless... may she could wear the dress as a skirt and buy a top to match.... I'm kidding!!!

  • It's obviously their screw-up, so they should fix it. If they say they can't lengthen it (they don't have much of a hem), the only thing I could recommend would be to add a similar colored organza slip/skirt underneath, or extend the hem with that. Alternatively you could do a satin ruffle in the same color, but that might be a bit too obvious. They could also add a length under it to look like a layered dress, sort of going with the ruching.

Honestly, with all the dress orders they do, you can't tell me they don't have MULTIPLE snippets of similar satin they are cutting OFF dresses to shorten them, and they can't grab one and add it to the bottom in a somewhat unobtrusive way.
  • I think we're going back on Saturday to try on the sample and compare it with the dress we have. Fingers crossed that it's a bit longer so they'll have to fix the screw up! God only knows what we'll do if we can't think of a way to make it a tad longer!  She can't even sit in it!

Thanks for all the advise, hopefully it'll all work out. Any other thoughts or suggestions, keep it coming!

  • yeah. Do that. Go back and try on the sample, then say "LOOK you guys messed up. FIX it. "
I hate DB customer service... lol
  • Well you said when she tried it on it wasn't this short. Did she try on the size she ended up ordering? If so, I'd complain to DB.
However, my MOH is somewhat tall (5'9") and many of the cocktail length dresses were too short on her when she tried them on. We had to pick a longer cocktail dress because of it. Frankly, I think the picture you posted is a little on the short side, esp. for a taller girl. Just IMO and that's coming from the perspective of me having a church wedding. If she tried on a different size than she ordered, I don't know that DB will do much about it b/c a smaller size would probably run shorter than whatever size she tried on.

As for fixing what you've got, I'd talk to a highly recommended seamstress not at DB and see what they recommend.

  • If DB won't reorder it, which it really seems like it was an ordering issue...I actually think a little ruffle on the bottom wouldn't look too bad. I've seen a few dresses lately that were fitted like that and has a more structured ruffle at the bottom and they were cute.

  • DB has had issues with product that comes in from the warehouse.  You should definitely see about getting your BM to go in and try on one of the samples of that dress in the size that she ordered as comparison, then talk with the store manager about rectifying the problem IF in fact the dress that was received was incorrectly made.  Mistakes happen ... give DB the chance to fix it (on THEIR dime) before worrying with alterations.  Since you're 2 months out, though .... do it ASAP!! :-)
