corset- when to buy?

Hi all,

Getting married in 5 months.  Bought dress off the rack (thank goodness) and it will need alterations, including the bust.  I want to buy a corset so that i don't have to keep pulling the top up as I always do with strapless bras (yes, even correctly fitted ones).

My question is- I'm hoping to lose about 15 pounds.  My Wedding Planner says that I don't need to initiate alterations for a few months and therefore should have some time to slim down prior.  Should I buy corset and initiate alterations pre-weight loss?  Give it a month or two?

Thanks!  Wasn't sure where to put this question.  mods, feel free to move if more appropriate elsewhere!

Re: corset- when to buy?

  • I'd get cups sewn in my dress long before I dealth with a corset.  You don't have to pull up a bra at all because it's sewn in the gown.

I started alterations a month before my wedding.  I had a zip up dress so it needed to be fitted to me, the size that I would be the day of the wedding.

Talk to your seamstress about a timeline.
  • Typically alterations don't usually start until about 1.5 to 2 months out so you have about 3 months before you need to start.

Are you wanting a corset or longline bra just for bust support or are you also wanting it for overall shape?  If it is just for bust support I would ask your seamstress if she can sew cups into your dress.  That way a bra is not necessary.  But if you are wanting one for the overall shape it gives then I would wait about 2 months or so to see if you lose anything and how much and then go from there.

  • Thanks ladies.  I am looking for support and a little lift  My dress has a zip back also.

I think I will make an appointment with the seamstress and talk about options.  I feel like a corset or longline bra (which I had to google and I think thats what i'm looking for) will just keep everything UP which is what i'm most worried about (boobies as well as the strapless dress).

I'm encouraged to hear that I don't have to get too stressed about the alterations yet.  My biggest concern is that it is going to take me a while to find whatever bra undergarmet I need (i'm a 30 bra size), and it would certainly be nice to just go with cups if I feel that brings enough support.

  • I will say that in most cases, as long as alterations are done correctly, your dress should be able to provide you with the support and lift you are looking for.  It is only when the alterations stink where you see brides with support and shape issues.

Also, maybe talk to your seamstress about adding a high waisted elastic belt with hook and eye closures (think of a really wide bra band) to the inside of your dress.  I had one in my dress (came that way) and that really helped with the whole keeping the dress up and in place issue.  My dress was also a zip back with buttons to cover the zipper.

Oh, yes!  I have an unstructured dress party (no boning) with this and it's great for holding up the dress!
  • Joy I have a few dresses that have that band and I love them!  Never once do I ever have to worry about them sliding down.  You wonder why they don't just go ahead and put them in all strapless dresses?!

  • I'm doing a corset too and I'd say wait til you have lost whatever weight you want to lose and then shop for a corset. Make sure you get a good quality one. Also, you need to do alterations about a month and a half to two months out.

  • Another option is to have the back of your dress turned into a lace up instead of zip.  I had that done to mine and it helped SO much.  That way you can lose, or gain whatever weight before the wedding, and not have to worry.

  • I also second sewing in bra cups into your dress. Or wear a strapless bra you already have and use body tape to secure bra to skin (and bra to dress if necessary).
