Are bowties inappropriate at an afternoon wedding?

My FI is dead set on wearing a bowtie. Our wedding is in a small, country chapel (not a fancy venue) at 4:30 in the afternoon. I'm worried this will look really formal and won't go with the rest of our wedding. Are there any rules for bowties?

Re: Are bowties inappropriate at an afternoon wedding?

  • I don't think so.  I have been to many daytime weddings and the guys wear bow ties.
  • Don't worry about it so much. I'm not sure what the proper etiquette is regarding bowties but if your fiance is dead set on wearing one let him win this battle. Its not very often a man is so devoted to a particular aspect of the wedding (for my and my fiance, he was adamant about having red velvet cake!)

  • A bowtie would be absolutely fine for an afternoon wedding!  You can cross that off your "things to worry about" list.  Enjoy!
  • Bow ties are appropriate any time of day.  You probably see more older men wearing them but there's no age restrictions and it has no connection to the formality of the occasion.

I see them more in the investment banking and advertising world these days
  • Not at all! I Super cute. Maybe go for a lighter print or color.
