Custom Dresses on Ebay??

I apologize if this is a dumb question. I imagine it's been a topic on here before, but I couldn't find anything on it when I searched.

I do not intend to spend a lot of money on my wedding dress, however, I am in love with (quite a few) Jim Hjelm dresses. I would be fine with a used dress, but I'm afraid I won't be able to find one in my size (I'm on the tiny side). Anyway, when I searched on Ebay I kept getting places that do "custom" dresses made to look just like any designer dress you want. Anyone have any experience with this? I read the seller's ratings and they were very positive but I don't know if they are genuine or not. My friend's sister is doing something similar, where she is having a designer look-a-like dress made in China; is this the same thing?

Thank you for your input!

Re: Custom Dresses on Ebay??

  • Beware!  After buying one of those gowns on Ebay, my Cousin got a dress that looked nothing like the pic posted and the quality was really lacking.  Also, there was a language barrier so it was hard communicate what exactly she wanted.

She ended up having to get a second gown (which she loved!) online at colettejeanbridal.com.

    Good luck!
  • My mom did a lot of ebay shopping for my dress (which I love) and she looked at the custom ones and read a lot of reviews where people said that it wasn't made the right way, coloring was off (actually had a yellow tint which I assume means they were smoking while sewing it), and problems with delivery because of customs. I say search every website mentioned in pp and open your mind up to other things. You can find really pretty dresses and save a lot of money by going that route, I think with alterations and cleaning, my dress will be under 250.
  • Thanks for the advice. I will keep an open mind, I have a lot of time yet so if I start early I'm sure I can find something.

Meredith, thank you for those, some how I missed them when I searched myself. I love the first dress!! I haven't gone in-person dress shopping at all yet so guess the next step should be making sure that style even looks good on me.

  • Yes it is the same thing.  When you read the reviews on Ebay, make sure each review is for a wedding gown, not just some stupid item...make sure wedding gowns are all they do.  I had a dress from China, but I was able to try the sample on at a local store, where I  originally found the gown and fell in love with it, and they ordered me a new one to fit perfect.  I had no idea it was a Maggie knockoff, I just had to have it!
