Beach Wedding - but with Scottish Kilts...!

I am planning to hold the wedding ceremony at the beach (it's planned for Sept 2010 in Northern CA, so it's not really a tropical setting) but my groom is Scottish and will be wearing his kilt, as will some members of the wedding party.  I have a two questions:

1. Is it odd for my bridesmaids, Matron of Honor and I to not wear shoes to the ceremony (I'm planning on wearing some beaded and crystal anklet-type things) on the beach but the men will be wearing their kilts and customary lace up shoes?

2. Some groomsmen are not Scottish and will not be wearing a kilt - will that look strange with some wearing kilts and others not?

Re: Beach Wedding - but with Scottish Kilts...!

  • Hi.  My fiance is from Scotland and will be wearing a Kilt too.  I know how difficult it can be finding opinions on kilt weddings since it's so rarely done!  As for your shoes, if you having it on the beach I would say that it's ok not to wear shoes.  I think that nice flip flops for you and the girls is a better idea, though.  Four out of the five guys are from Scotland, so they will be completely comfy in their kilts. My brother, who is not, is going to wear one too.  However, if there were going to be more than one guy in a suit, I wouldn't have a problem mixing it up.  I don't think it looks wierd at all.  I actually think it's wierder to make a bunch of guys who are not really Scottish wear it.  It kind of starts to seem "costumey".  Just my opinion though!!  Good Luck!

  • Thanks Colleen! It's getting more and more difficult to figure out what I want - incorporating the beach and kilts isn't easy! Thanks for your reply!
  • My FI is Scottish too, so the groomsmen are all in kilts (Spirit of Bannockburn). I think mixing suits and kilts will look fine- you wouldn't want anyone to feel uncomfortable. And FWIW, we're having a groomswoman, so our sides really aren't matchy. GL!
